so I've played through the Landsmeet, now, and I won't get to play again until next Monday probably, so now I will put on some reflective music (post about that later?) and reflect!

alert! lots and lots of meta follows. Also, my perspective on some of the following stuff might change once I beat the game; we'll see what happens.

on Laemira )

on being an elf )

on being a mage )

on Landsmeet, and Laemira's decision )

on the Teyrn of Gwaren and his daughter )

on Alistair's character )

on the romance )

SO BASICALLY, IN SUMMARY: I love this game, a lot, because it gives me so many options and so many things to think about and doodle with in my brain (and Zevran! I...think I love him more than Alistair. My feelings towards Alistair are complicated these days, as you um. Might have noticed), and because it's really, really good at sucking you in and making you feel a part of what's going on, and I should probably just hurry up and join the fandom and post these thoughts, which have probably been said before, in one of their comms, shouldn't I. OH WELL. I HAVE COUSINS TO BABYSIT AND AN ARCHDEMON TO DEFEAT AND FIC TO BETA. Time to go to bed.

Thank you for yesterday's prompts; I will use them as study breaks over the next week of INTENSE WRITING OF INTENSENESS. For now, have a shorter meme, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] redbrunja. I added one more prompt in order to balance out the number of times each character appears.

1. Write down the names of 10 characters.
2. Write a fic of fifteen words or less for every prompt, using the characters determined by the numbers. Do NOT read the prompts before you do step 1.

1. Katara
2. Hamlet
3. Laura Farthing
4. Attolia
5. Will Schuester
6. Obi-Wan Kenobi
7. Zuko
8. Sir Nevalle
9. Ron Weasley
10. Eugenides

this was harder than I expected; frickin' word limits )

1. Re: things that disappointed me about Graceling: I think my problem with Katsa's big NO I WON'T GET MARRIED THING is that I could sort of see why she was doing that, in a murky area that was half-in the writing and half-subtext-y. Like, all the examples of marriage that Katsa saw involved the women settling down in a domestic setting and running a household and having babies, all things she's not interested in. So I can understand her not wanting to end up in that situation.

but this does not mean I am satisfied with the way it was handled )

2. I finished the Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. One of the things that kept coming to my mind, over and over again, was, "man, [livejournal.com profile] philia_fan would love this series, because all the books stand alone on their own!" I know people cite them as examples of series books that get Newberries, but honestly Silver on the Tree is the one that I would say most relies on the others. The Dark is Rising, the Newberry Honor, stands quite firmly and solidly on its own two feet, and The Grey King (Newberry winner) only slightly less so, in that there's a little background information that is helpful to have when reading it. But even the characters appear and are fleshed out on their own terms in each novel. It really is fascinating to read.

Susan Cooper's prose is also wonderfully, indescribably British. I'm not entirely sure why. It just is.

So in short, read this series, if not in the least to observe how curiously different it is while somehow managing to be very much the same.

And this is a long post, and I wrote it instead of doing my Zutara Week contribution for the day, so I think I will save movie-related musings for another post.

Another friend of mine is taking the GRE tomorrow, so please send good vibes her way, too!

Love and sweet dreams,

so this popped up on my f-list three times in quick succession, and I like it, so I'm doing it.

List the first lines of your last twenty stories. See if you find any patterns. (And flist, I'd love your opinions on patterns you notice.)

an update!

Of the fanfic variety.  (Stop groaning.  ...I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] mysteree80 .  I know you've already stopped reading, but I'm still giving you a Look.)

Namely, I have finished Not Yet by Lightning, with an awesome final line that belongs half to me (the non-awesome part) and half to Quark (everything that is awesome).  So, uh, if you want to read it, since now you can just read it all at once and be really confused, rather than just sitting around for weeks waiting for an update to continue your confusion, um, please, go ahead.  I put in some nice symbolism, some running motifs, some character development...all in all, I think it turned out quite well.

Fanfiction.net says it rounds out nicely at 63,950 words, of which I would guess at least 950 are author's-note-type-things.  So...that's pretty long.  For me, anyway.

If anyone feels like reading it, again, you can find it here:  http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4142011/1/Not_Yet_by_Lightning .

Yay!  Chapter two of my fic is up!

So, since I'm stubborn, here's the summary of Things You Need to Know for Chapter Two:

In the last chapter, we met Laura Farthing, who is the main character of my fic.  If I'm ever feeling particularly narcissistic, I'll post up the screencap I have of her, but in the meantime, you'll get a mental picture all your own.

We also heard mention of her father, Daeghun.  As Daeghun is an elf and Laura is 100% human, it's pretty obvious that he is actually her foster-father.  He's known for being a bit...reserved.  Daeghun's half-brother is a half-elf named Duncan, who owns a bar called the Sunken Flagon.

Again, questions/comments/reviews are always welcome.  :-)

Not Yet by Lightning, chapter 2

Whelp, folks, I know I've been talking big for a while now, but it's FINALLY HERE!

That's right, my epically long (if 55K is epic) fanfiction based on the main plot of the Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign is finally up and running!  Now, I know y'all are all just falling over yourselves to read it, but there might be some lingering questions in your mind, such as "What the heck is Neverwinter Nights all about?" or "What's a tiefling again?"

So here's the deal.  If you want to read it (and some of y'all PROMISED you would *puppy eyes* thought of course you don't have to, but just think about what a welcome procrastination tool homework break it could be...), I'm going to be writing brief summaries of the main plot action that I left out of my fic here at the LJ, and then posting a link to the chapter.  That way you (hopefully) won't be totally lost; the fic is designed as a series of...snippets, I guess, of a couple of my own invented subplots that rely on the main plot and intersect with it but don't cover every aspect of it.  Some of the scenes take dialogue directly from the game and then tweaked, others are completely my own; I'll be sure to let you know which is which.

Now, please enjoy Not Yet by Lightning, Chapter 1.

Actually, this is just a long list (mostly for [personal profile] loquaciousquark's benefit, since she's the only one who's shown any interest got half an idea of what I'm talking about) of Neverwinter Nights 2 fanfiction that I like.  Some of it's better than others, but there's a surprisingly large (proportionally speaking) amount of good fanfiction (at least that I read--and I didn't read half the stories simply because they weren't what I was looking for at the time) in the NWN 2 section (which is a subsection of the NWN section, under "Games" in the directory, that mostly takes up the most recent four pages).

Anyway, um, fanfic.  Here we go:

Cheers, all!

I just thought I'd warn you.

anyway, I've got this niggling little storyline in my head, except these excerpts don't do them justice, but I'm too chicken to upload them to ff.net, so instead I'm torturing whoever stumbles across this with them.  the characters come from the game Neverwinter Nights 2.  This is fanfic expanding upon some of the scenarios in the game.  A rundown of the names mentioned:

Anyway, here's some un-betaed fic.  Any thoughts would be most welcome.  I kinda want to expand this, but I also need to beat the game.  Oh, decisions, decisions.
