well my dad is on your side re: Spock/Uhura (well, for him, it's all about what they did for the character of Uhura in the simple act of hooking her up with Spock, i.e. expanded it beyond anyone's wildest dreams), and he pointed out that TOS-canonically speaking Spock did have that one girlfriend that one time and so maybe younger!Spock would be more open to kissing or whatever.

My reference is more to the whole "first time we actually see Romulans" episode in TOS (p.s. did I mention boooooooo making Romulans the bad guys?), where Spock and this Romulan chick "make out" via stroking each other's faces (man if I knew how to search for that effectively I'd try to find video of it). 'cause when I was first watching TOS it was on the Sci-Fi channel, and they had all these interviews with the cast sprinkled throughout the episodes, and Leonard Nimoy was talking about how the script originally called for kissing, and then he and some other writerly people were like, hm, would Spock really kiss someone? Let's come up with something cooler. Then later on, when Spock did kiss people (aside from aforementioned ex-girlfriend on spore planet, also the planet where he was hanging from tree limbs and giggling and I was like WTF IS THIS SPOCK which also might explain some of my aversion to overly touchy-feely Spock), it was associated with crappy season 3 writing wherein they had totally abandoned loyalty to the character/all the characters.

ALSO Sarek and Amanda just touch two fingers and sometimes less is more is sexier (c.f. all the little handholding scenes in Atonement being waaaaaaaay hotter than coitus interruptus in library although mmmmm library!sex).

I think [livejournal.com profile] philia_fan down below me does a better job of talking about Kobayachi Maru, inasmuch as I've only seen Wrath of Khan like twice (shame, shame on me, although I did pick up on most of the references to it throughout this movie). ...actually I've probably seen Star Trek IV and Star Trek: First Contact the most, out of all the movies. (Star Trek IV is just always on TV.)

But I too was weirded out by the obvious reboot. That was lame.

P.S. DRIVEBY FANGIRLING OF KARL URBAN AS MCCOY mainly because today I was trying to remember why I knew him and then, duh, Eomer.
