1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it’s over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this meme--I was working off zero inspiration, and since you don't really get to linger (okay I lingered a bit on the last one) or edit (okay so I added two words to the end of number 4), it's very, very rough. And I am very hesitant about showing rough stuff. So...here they are.

I cheated and skipped songs I didn't really know (hey, this is my entire music library minus musicals I'm working with, sometimes I hit up things that are on here because they were with something else). Number 9 is the only one without any sort of ending (ran out of time). I found that a lot of them involved little scenes or threads from canon that I'd like to explore--I could easily expand 1, 2, and 4. Most of them have something to do with, or make a lot more sense in the context of, the song they were written to, e.g. number 5, which I actually had to expand because the song was still going--the third and fourth sentences of the first paragraph are "eh" in my book. I also included song length, so you could get an idea of what I was working with. XD

Fandom: Avatar, Katara/Zuko

1. Live Free – Son Volt (3:13)
“I want to be free,” she confessed, touching her necklace again, not looking at him. “I’m so tired of being afraid.”

“Is that how everyone feels?” he asked, but before she could answer, he said, “I know it is. I’ve seen it.”

She glanced at him, still sitting slouched over his crossed legs, facing her but looking at his hands in his lap. The green light of the cave sent strange shadows playing over a face already difficult to read; but she trusted his voice, because she could hear the same pain, the same weariness weighing down on him.

2. Heavy Cloud No Rain – Sting (3:47)
Zuko watched as Katara stood in the middle of the road, towering over the old man humbly prostrate before her. He watched her movements, admiring her grace in every sense, her absolute precision, the way her form-fitting outfit allowed him to follow the lines of her figure as she moved. The way she drew in breath, and then exhaled and extended her arms, and stopped the rain.

He saw her, still, over and under and around the perfect spheres hanging before his eyes. He’d seen her display this kind of power earlier, bloodbending, and again he thought back to their first meetings, how helpless she’d been, how he’d sneered at the little peasant trying to fight him.

Now she was anything but weak, and anything but little, and everything—beautiful.

3. Silver Thunderbird – Marc Cohn (4:38)
She’d refused to go with him, no matter how he pleaded and cajoled, and so he finally resulted to outright subterfuge, agreeing to spar with her. He was careful to avoid the appearance of steering her too openly, but he managed to back her into the basket and slammed the door shut at the same time he sent a blast of fire that superheated the air, inflating the balloon.

“What are we—Zuko!” she shrieked as they took off, straight up. He used one hand to steer while the other continued heating the air, until finally they were out over the open ocean. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Proving a point,” he said. “This is better than flying on Appa, and you know it.”

“It is not,” she said.

“Less bumpy.”

“Trapped in the air currents.”

“Less energy-consuming.”

“More noticeable.”

“Distinct lack,” he drew out the word, “of eau de wet animal fur.”

“…all right, you have me there.”

4. How Songs Collide – The Undertones (I’m Yours, Collide, One Hundred Years, Superman (It’s Not Easy) and a few others) (3:58)
The first time they touched, she stumbled into him and he steadied her, supportive and ensnaring all at once.

They crashed again at the North Pole, this time with a bending she’d learned from their last encounter, water and fire steaming up the walls until both were blinded by the fight.

The cave under Ba Sing Sei was too expansive, and the steam evaporated so that each could see the other’s face as they butted heads, he using his pride as a shield, she crying why with every blow.

They collided again on a dock, she surprising him with the force and ferocity of her embrace, she surprising herself with the strength with which she clung to him, a strength returned in the grip of his arms.

5. Head Over Feet – Alanis Morisette (4:27)
Zuko was raised as a lord, a noble, able to put on a show of good breeding but needing three years on a ship to hammer the basic principles of human interaction into his thick skull. He had no specific plan to attract female attention—they seemed drawn to his dorky shyness, his need for affection. Katara hated him until she didn’t, and then she found in him the best friend she’d always wanted but never known. It wasn’t intentional on either side—it simply was, an intuitive understanding of each other, a sense that ran as deep as their bending that each would be there for the other. Anything else was pure chance—he didn’t know how to be charming, didn’t know how to get the girl—he simply was himself.

And that, frankly, was all Katara needed.

6. Andy You’re A Star – The Killers (3:13)
She was the Avatar’s girlfriend.

This was how the Avatar introduced her to everyone they met. At first it was sheer excitement, dragging her around by the hand and telling everyone that he had finally managed to find the girl of his dreams, his girlfriend. And then it settled into routine—his girlfriend, and he was so proud to have her—and eventually it was hardly worth mentioning, except that it did get mentioned, always first, a constant reminder of where she fit into his world.

He watched this, watched her equally giddy smile turn into something fondly amused, change into something that was happy enough, change into something that was befitting the Avatar’s girlfriend.

But he had seen her freeze men in their tracks, bend their blood and their bodies, stop the rain. And he knew she was so much, so much more.

7. Madame N’Aime Pas –Francis Cabrel (3:31)
Katara didn’t like fireflakes.

She didn’t like Fire Nation hair styles.

She really didn’t like those little clips they wore in their hair.

She didn’t like the jungle climate.

She didn’t like the fabrics, the metals, the woodwork. She hated the stares, the hostility, the confusion, the condescension.

But she did like the music, and the laughter, and the other food. She liked the turtle ducks, and the marble. She especially liked way the Fire Lord clenched his hands in her hair and moaned her name, and so she thought she might stay, after all.

8. If God Will Send His Angels – U2 (4:33)

They both descended from on high to help the lowly, the less fortunate. They appeared out of the darkness and returned to it with little more than the whisper of cloth and the slightest thump of a foot, a thump that implied a corporeality at odds with their ethereal appearance. He was nothing more than a shadow with a face, terrifying to some; she was a gauzy curtain in the moonlight, trailing healing in her fingertips. They left grateful people in their wake, and helped untold numbers of people to hope, however tenuously.

They left destruction. They left those who crossed them, those who angered them, those who simply were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were selfish; their motives were not to help others, but to help themselves, to cling to that part of themselves they couldn’t share with anyone else, the part that wanted glory and greatness.

They found each other, and then they were whole.

9. Closing Time – covered by the Undertones (3:07)
“Closing time,” Iroh announced.

A chorus of “aw”s greeted this, aside from one exhausted sigh. “Finally. I’d forgotten how tiring this was,” the Fire Lord said, untying his apron.

“Aw, is wittle Zuko tired after a day of hard work?” Katara teased.

“I’m not really sure that’s a good color on you,” Mai said for the umpteenth time.

Aang yawned. “Is it really that late? I hadn’t noticed!”

“It really is that late, and everyone needs their beauty rest,” Iroh said, winking at Suki, who blushed and delicately scooted away from Sokka’s embrace.

Undeterred, Sokka took her hand and tugged her up from their booth. “I have to walk Suki home,” he said. “See the rest of you tomorrow!”

“Walk her home,” Toph muttered under her breath. “Uh-huh.”

10. Defying Gravity – Wicked (5:55)
Zuko watched Aang fly around, leaping off his air scooter and swooping up with his glider before closing it and falling into an impossibly steep dive, pulling out at the last minute in a gentle wind that landed him safely on his feet. He laughed, as he usually did, and then opened his glider around, flying in circles around Momo.

“Show-off,” Katara said, sitting next to him.

“Yeah,” Zuko said. “But hey, he’s having fun.”

“At least for a few more days,” he said, looking around. Katara held out half a melon, and he took it, crunching on it. “I don’t know how he does it.”

“Does what?”

“Stays so cheerful.” Zuko shook his head. “Look at him.”

“That’s just Aang,” she said, shrugging. “He’s always happy. Well, almost always. And even when he’s not…he doesn’t hold grudges for long.”

“I figured that out.”

She nudged him playfully with her shoulder. “You’re just lucky.”

“Aang’s luckier.”

“I hope so,” she said, not seeing how he looked at her, wondering for the umpteenth time whether her blithe affection for the Avatar concealed a deeper passion. “But hey,” she said. “He can fly. And if gravity can’t beat him, how can Ozai?”

Zuko raised his eyes to the sky, watching the boy zoom around. “I hope you’re right.”

“I know I am,” she said, and for a moment, he let himself bask in her confidence, and her presence, while the Avatar blocked out the sun in the sky.
