(omg Haruhi stop being so hard to write already.)

(I don't have a Haruhi icon either? DOUBLEFAIL.)

When Haruhi looked up, her eyes traveling from his bare feet to his tousled hair, she felt—something, something she didn’t recognize, something that made her strangely shy. She couldn’t help staring, following rivulets of water as they dripped down his chest, at once recoiling deep inside herself and wanting to reach out and catch his attention, if only for a moment. The slight brush of his fingers against hers as he took the glass from her hands terrified her, and she was grateful when he took his gaze off her. These over-exaggerated heights of emotion seemed more suited to Tamaki than to herself; she busied herself with controlling them, puzzled as to their source.

Yet the same wanting overcame her as she watched him stare into the fake jungle, her hand landing on his arm with more confidence than she felt, her voice practically babbling as it sought to reassure him. His hand, large, warm, and reassured, rested on her head; she had the strangest feeling, as he lifted it away, that he lifted her right out of her skin.

It was probably because she was preoccupied with resubstantiating herself that she ran after him—that, and the perfectly natural concern for a boy nearly twice her size running into a jungle with mad creatures all by himself. She could see, of course, that the boy nearly twice her size was definitely strong enough to defend himself against whatever might come his way, but it didn’t seem right that he should run off—alone. She, however, being half his size, was ill-equipped to go crashing into the jungle, which should have occurred to her, except that notions of that sort never occurred to her.

And then in the stunned silence after he said her name she found herself in his arms, her hand resting against his sternum (dry, aside from the humidity trying to cling to their skin), and a small smile on her face. It disappeared as soon as she became aware of it, but by then the silence had turned comfortable, and she could do no more than sit up, doing her best to be alert to the world around—in front of her.

“You weren’t lonely without me, were you?” Honey said, patting him on the head.

He looked down at his cousin, and said, “Not completely.”

And though she stood there with the others, she had the strongest sense that he was not-looking at her, the strongest sense of a shudder running from her toes to her ears, the strongest sense that she ought to blush, a little. She didn’t, of course, any more than she said anything when he brushed by her, his fingers skipping across her arm by what she firmly told herself was accident, because it was senseless to think it to be anything else and even more ridiculous to want it to be so.

Uh, I dunno why I'm even commenting on this sense I have no idea when it comes to fan-fic, except it was Ouran. ^^ So don't take that seriously, I guess.

ah-hahahaha. Well, the "lot going through her head" is sort of the point of the piece--a headshot of what's going through there, even if she's not really thinking of or about it--it's still happening? I prefer writing fanfics that do this sort of thing--take a moment, examine it from all sides--rather than trying to write my very own story, because it seems like I ought to expend that kind of effort on regular fiction. Snippets and one-shots are my forte. XD

so wait, does she know about Tamaki now? do I really want to know the answer to that question? Because I love Kyouya/Haruhi more (I guess, with them, I see a chance for growth, whereas with Mori I don't see anything about him changing, regardless of any relationship with Haruhi). And as much as I love Tamaki...unless he's totally managed to move himself out of fantasy realm, I'm still not entirely happy about him-with-Haruhi. Because like even when it's obvious that he's crushing on her, not daddy-loving her, he's still crushing on "my idea of what girl!Haruhi" is versus "who Haruhi actually is." While Kyouya has always (from the first!) seen Haruhi for exactly who she is.

...also the idea of Tamaki maturing enough to see Haruhi for who she really is, uh, saddens me somehow.

anyway, DON'T TELL ME I DON'T WANNA KNOW. any beating-round-the-bush meta comments on the above would be welcome, though.

Well, I'll try to be meta-not-telling.

Let's put it this way: you know how Haruhi's dad has his mature moments, but is still a complete wacko/kid-like/Haruhi-foil? I think Tamaki is going to grow up just like that.

No need to grieve, dearling.

(Personally, of all the men the one I'd probably like most in person is Tamaki-Papa. He's slyly and tall and suave and silly. >.<)

Obviously SLYLY is an editing failure point, and was meant to revert to SLY.

Also, can I say that twin icon for the post (sorry, I can't identify which it is) is absolutely awesome? So cute!

yeah, but Haruhi's already GOT her father, you know? I mean I know it's pretty typical for girls to look for guys with similar positive qualities to their dads, but Tamaki is almost scarily similar.

also I just ship Kyouya/Haruhi and that's, uh, pretty much all there is to that oops I really ought to stop doing this to myself.

(here's a question--how much does the endgame shipping in Ouran reflect on its role as both a parody of and participater in shojo troupes?)

it's Kaoru! from the beach episode (one of my favorites), though I don't remember why he was doing that...p.s. Kaoru is my favorite twin. Although I really wish Hikaru and Haruhi had just gone on a few dates for their own sakes.

Wow, nice shoulders, Kyouya. (I need to check this, now I have my centimeters-mind on, but have you ever noticed how almost all those guys are *really* tall? Kyouya is actually way up there...which surprised me.)

I have to say, I do *not* ship Kyouya/Haruhi, though I understand it. (This may be a product of being a reader of the manga first. Just a different dynamic, since the series is much more compact.) But I definitely love that guy.

I think the question of the tropes there is a highly interesting one, and needs be examined closer. In pursuit of this, I will obviously need to reread/rewatch it again soon. ^_^

Kaoru...awww. I like him, too.
