a tragedy in three styles

there once was a 'puter named Dell
Whose keyboard did not work so well
One day the hard drive
just went up and died
leading Jade to say oh what the HELL?

***

One morning, the morning of Ash Wednesday, the day on which all good Catholics are fasting their hearts out to varying degrees and the campus is full of people with stuff on their face, a college junior named Jade reached to hit snooze on her cell phone alarm clock and merely succeeded in pitching said cell phone over the side of her bed.  Sighing, she climbed down the ladder--careful to avoid the pile of folded-yet-still-damp shirts sitting precariously on the top rung--and retrieved her phone from where it had landed on the softness of her as-yet-un-hung-up red coat.  Relieved, she closed it to shut off the alarm, and then turned around in her lofted-bed-induced cave and opened her laptop, intending to let it boot up while she brushed her teeth.

She pressed the boot button.  The Dell screen came to life--and then just as abruptly died, replaced by the words UNABLE TO FIND BOOT SECTOR.

Jade blinked.

CANNOT FIND DRIVE FOR BOOT SECTOR, the computer informed her (or something like that--the only words she really focused on were "unable," "find," and "drive").  PRESS F1 TO TRY AGAIN AND F2 TO ENTER SETUP.

She pressed F1.

UNABLE TO FIND BOOT SECTOR, the computer said again.

She pressed F2.  She was confronted by a blue screen she found vaguely familiar, enough to know that it was a screen for The Experts.

She called her father.

"You haven't been backing things up, have you," was the first thing Daddy said.

Jade accused her father of inducing panic attacks.

"Well, at best, they might be able to get the files off it," he said.  "...on the other hand, youcouldhavelosteverything."

Jade ungraciously thanked her father for confirming her worst suspicions, and started making a mental list of all the people to whom she had ever emailed anything.

***

Lost:  Hard Drive.  Files Not Found.

***

so, logistically speaking, I am computerless, and have no idea when I will be getting my computer back, much less any of the many, many files I had on it.  A lot of the important ones I had emailed to people, so they're either in an inbox somewhere or on a computer, but some (like all of my round 2 edits of "Falling Slowly") are currently lost (and maybe the latest version of my NaNo, sweet God I know this is the beginning of Lent and I need to make sacrifices, but this isn't quite what I had in mind).  I am trapped, reduced to using Vista on computer cluster computers.

The really bad:  Even if they do find my files, I had to sign a thing that said maybe I wouldn't get my music back.  Which, okay, not all of it strictly came from my CDs that I had burned, but more than the majority--almost the totality--does belong to me.  This Is Frustrating.

the kind of bad:  No idea if I can RP this weekend.  There's computer clusters open for 24 hours, but they're waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay far away from me.  RP kids, I will keep you updated as this situation develops.

the I'm-trying-not-to-think-about-this bad:  I MIGHT HAVE LOST EVERYTHING.

the good:  "Head Under Water" got emailed out last night, so all I've lost from that were a couple of things that I had added to the not-sent-out-draft, which I still remember and have written down.

the always look on the bright side of life:  hey, I now have more free time to do my homework, read recreationally, and sleep?

prayers to St. Anthony concerning my lost files would be greatly appreciated at this time.

will keep you posted.  also, will have someone update and tell y'all if I have a nervous breakdown.  I feel weirdly calm right now, but then again I think I'm still in shock and trying to avoid going either way.

Bad luck. :(

Good post, though. :)

Except... drive/died? :\

I know. D:

Thanks! I am trying to distract myself via creative endeavors.

It's...masculine rhyme, where the vowels rhyme but the end of the words don't? No, that's not it. But I feel like "assonance" isn't specific enough for it being the end of the line. And Wikipedia says...jack squat. But the vowels rhyme! And considering I can't write poetry for jack squat, I'm pretty impressed with myself. :-b

This is surprisingly coherent and well-written for an entry about something so potentially horrible!!

"sweet God I know this is the beginning of Lent and I need to make sacrifices, but this isn't quite what I had in mind"
Aw, poor dear! *huggles Jade*

DISTRACTION IS A VERRRRRY GOOD THING RIGHT NOW. HERE, HAVE A HAWT ZUKO.

And if that stops working, go read yourself some sexy, sexy Prufrock.

I backed up my computer after I read this :x

OH DEAR JADE I WILL PRAY FOR YOUR COMPUTER

perhaps this will be what gets you a MACBOOK *huggles her macblack*

I am so sorry.
Having gone through computer related anxiety, grief, and resurrection myself lately, I am praying the same will come to you, here.

And if that sounds a little canned, it's because I'm being distracted by the Costis-like perfection of that Franco guy in your icon. *beams*

Is your Dell under warranty? I assume you already sent it in.

If it is not: I could have just opened up the tower and taken the hard drive out, and popped it into another PC (with a neat little tool that can allow me to plug any Hard Drive in externally)

If it is: I could have popped in a linux Live CD, and gotten the files transferred over a network connection to another PC (essentially creating a backup for you) or burned files onto a CD/DVD (assuming you had two disc drives)

If for some reason they tell you that they can't fix it, lemme know and I will help. ^_^

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha, you and three other people I know all offered to do this within seconds of me posting this. Right now OIT has it (it's no longer under warranty), and I'm guessing (because I trust the middle-aged, been-doing-this-my-whole-life guys that I have met back there) that they are doing exactly that. If they don't do it by this weekend, I'm going over there and getting it back and tracking someone down to do it for me, and then I'm going to go from there.

so I will definitely let you know if I need help! thanks so much!

noooooooooo!! ;.;
and I was gonna take care of Gray's plot this weekend and embarrass the heck out of everyone else while I was at it! ;.;

at least I've got copies of all the RP logs. so if you ever want those...

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
;____;

could you maybe move the plot to Saturday? I am in negotiations to borrow a laptop, and it might involve me going to a party Friday night. Alternatively, I can hit up a computer cluster, but I would have to leave earlier-than-normal. I will...again keep you updated on what's going on. BECAUSE HO CRAP I really don't want to miss Gray going back to normal.

Also we need to talk doing Sorel's plot. This lack of laptop is going to complicate things. D:

[identity profile] demonicfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if I can move it to Saturday.
But I'll try.
If I can't... I'll definitely put the log up where you can read it and you won't miss out on too much of the fun.

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
well, I will TRY to be on tonight. We will see how well it goes...

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fairly certain that I will be on tonight, due to awesome friends with laptops, so don't worry! :-)

Well, that's rather crap-tastic to wake up to.

Reminds me that I need to back my own stuff up, as, um, I like it, and losing a hard drive in mid-semester is a beating for schoolwork.

Hopefully there's time enough to revive the hard drive, or replace it, or whatver ritual is necessary to render the Machine functional. Sometimes incense helps.

That aside, I suppose Sorel's safe from Vaahn attempting to fight her for her clothes.

Vaahn maintains he'd win, and thinks it would help Sorel get over her 'modesty' issues.

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
and back it up not-on-your-computer. that's important too.

that's what I'm thinking. at worst, I'll get it back before I go back home, and have my dad look at it.

THAT IS SO SAD I am trying to figure out how to get on this weekend. She also wants to ask him why sexual innuendo is funny. Although wait, he really does want to fight her?

Sorel is, within her mind, fairly certain that he would probably win, but she would never admit that out loud and would fight tooth and nail to prevent it from happening. She also wants to know, what modesty issues?

[identity profile] raptor1313.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
When do you go back home? I'm certain spring break is soon, but that's still a couple weeks.

All entertainment aside, that's a while to be without your files and archives. Even if you can save them, it's still a pain in the arse.

Vaahn suggests Sorel might have modesty issues after losing a fight for the clothes. Then again, she'd probably just scuttle up to the Crow's Nest, and hurl rocks and abuse from there if not silence.

Why is she so certain he'd win, though? As I gather, she's got hardcore training, but Vaahn's shown signs of his capability. If nothing else, he's more readily vicious. Is that what's tipping her scale?

Then again, the cost of fighting her would be more than physical. Vaahn is reasonably certain that beating Sorel might interfere with their budding, awkward friendship. Especially if it means that she has to traipse around naked for a while.

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
A week from today! I should be home late Thursday night. With any luck.

Especially as I still have nowhere to PUT them.

...you know I really have no idea what would happen to her if she lost. Of course, she would like to point out that she didn't meant Vaahn would get to TAKE her clothes. She meant Vaahn would get to see the bruise. Or something. If anything, she would just retreat and stop caring whether or not he saw anything. Somewhere she would be very uncomfortable, but she'd ignore it. Woo!

She's certain he'd win because hand-to-hand is not her best subject, whereas Vaahn's really good at it AND he has the whole size advantage thing. Plus, she's...a little out of practice. And doesn't actually know how to "fight viciously" (is this a street-fighting thing? she asks, curious).

It...probably would do interesting things to it. Especially if they disagreed over the nature of the removal of clothing and the duration it would have to last.

I'm just amused he's not thinking about what would happen to GRAY if Sorel were walking around naked... :-b

[identity profile] raptor1313.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they said they were fighting for clothes.

Vaahn says that viciousness is a product of being willing, able, and imaginative enough to use whatever you can lay hands on. It also involves killing the other guy.

They would probably have to negotiate the period of clothes-less-ness prior to agreeing to fight. Vaahn does own the advantage in reach and size, but enough skill in hand-to-hand can overcome that. Vaahn thinks if it were a staff fight, however, he'd probably come out worse, since there's a difference between knowing how to use it and being at home with it.

Vaahn thinks that at the moment, Gray would probably not notice a topless Sorel. A healed Gray, however, would likely notice, flush a lot, and look awkward. Probably look at Vaahn dirty, as well.

[identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorel just said it was an all-or-nothing deal.

...Sorel agrees that fighting viciously might cause problems in their baby!friendship, probably yes, as if they seriously attempted to kill each other that would put an end to the friendship, at least for one of them.

Sorel says she knows how to use lots of weapons. She also suggests they not use any of the pointy ones. (Sorel may or may not be avoiding any proddings Vaahn is doing) And she thinks she has the hand-to-hand skill, but she's still wary of whatever tricks Vaahn might have up his sleeve.

Sorel agrees. (Sorel's player thinks this fight should be postponed until after Gray is healed. XD)

[identity profile] beautyinsleep.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
That...there's really no other way to put this...that really sucks. D:

I hope that you haven't lost everything! *prays* [livejournal.com profile] jstorer2 seems very helpful if Dell doesn't work it out.

Great way to externalize your problems, though. <3333333

[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com 2009-02-26 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh noes!!! I'm so sorry. I have high hopes that you'll recover all you files.

I agree about the mac. That's what my next one will be, I think.

[identity profile] philia-fan.livejournal.com 2009-02-27 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain. We've got some sort of virus that seems to necessitate our getting a new computer. It doesn't exactly bode well for finishing that first draft SOON.

OH JADE. I COME BACK AND I FIND THIS. I'm not really s praying person but i'm paranoid about laptops. hence i am praying for you
