it starts...(you think you know a guy)

Avatar: The Last Airbender teaser trailer

(so did James Cameron win the lawsuit or what? anyway, talk about bad omens, not even getting the full title of the thing in.)

but amidst it all, my real reaction?

fuck this liveaction shit.

granted this reaction is probably influenced by all the horrible language in that most glorious of films, Bridget Jones's Diary, but if Colin Firth can say "fuck" then so can I.

(OH GOD COLIN FIRTH.)

But seriously? It just looks...weird. It was the ships that threw me. The airbending sequence was, as others are pointing out, boring, or at least it was too long, but then it zoomed out (nitpick!fangirl says, "where the hell is he supposed to be?" and "OH MY GOD HIS ARROWS WTF HIS ARROWS") and the ships started appearing and I just went...wtf? It just looks so weird, all 3D. And I know Katara isn't going to look like Katara (biggest concern? probably) and worst of all they're not going to sound the same and it isn't going to be them. No matter how good a job the actors do, it isn't going to be them. The Gaang. And the villains. And everyone.

So in the end, it's not even a problem of racefail (which basically amounts to "was there a fair shot at racially-balanced casting? um no"). It's a problem of being not-right. I'm happy with the cartoon medium, and I love the voice-acting cast. The movie's like--like the third Mummy movie, where they didn't have Rachel Weisz as Evie because she was all "I'm not taking my baby into China" (perfectly understandable). It doesn't matter how good a job the next girl does, she isn't Evie. She's some other chick saying Evie's lines and acting in her place. Like the guy who plays Lupin, who is so completely detached from my image of the man character that every time he comes on screen I have to think to remember who he's supposed to be.

so fuck this liveaction shit, and give me my cartoons, dammit.

Don't kill me Jade, but I'm kind of excited.

Yes, it's different. Yes, it's not really going to be OUR AVATAR, but...but...it'll still kind of be Avatar live action on the big screen. Just think of the awesome fight sequences to be had (as long as they do them well).

I'm really dreading that chick as Katara, too, I gotta admit. Like, really dreading it. I don't even care as much that Jasper freaking Hale is going to be Sokka. Katara is just such a crucial character to nail (not that the rest aren't) but...in some ways she holds the show together. We get so much of her feelings, her actions, her journey, (not to mention her awesome narration over the show's opening), that if she's wrong, it could ruin the whole thing.

But still, I'm kind of excited.

I do want to know where in the world Aang (it's almost hard to say that about him) is and why the FN ships are coming at him at and Air Temple. ????

Also COLIN FIRTH OMG!! HE'S MADE OF WIN!! My friend and I just watched the new movie called "Easy Virtue" last night and Colin Firth was absolutely awesome in it!! He even danced the tango (if that's not hot, I don't know what is)!

I WILL DOWNLOAD IT FOR THE FIGHT SEQUENCES I mean that kid's martial arts skillz are v. impressive. I just don't want to have to watch everything else.

DEV PATEL AS SOKKA FOREVER!

And you're right about Katara, in every way. Just the other day, while rewatching an episode, I was thinking about how from the very beginning, as much as the show is about Aang [and Zuko], it's really from Katara's POV. She's the narrator, and we see so much of the effect of what's going on through her because she wears her heart on her sleeve.

This is a piece of meta for another day. :-b

COLIN FIRTH. IS SO. HOT.

Yes, thats what I'm thinking. I'm doing my best to remember to think of the cartoon and movie as separate. I've already accepted that the original cartoon series simply Cannot Be Topped, but I'm still hoping for an enjoyable show.

I was watching Sozin' Comet today, and I thought to myself, (like you said) this Cannot Be Topped. So I'll just think of the movie as based on the cartoon, a story very heavily influenced by Avatar, but NOT AVATAR. I hope that'll work for me.

I didn't have exactly the same reaction to Lupin but oh man that actor looked NOTHING like the Lupin in my head. Nothing.

well, point one: I'm not going to go see it. and yes, I am setting myself up not to like it, but they haven't given me any reason to set myself up any other way--the more I see/hear, the more I don't feel like giving it anything.

and like I said, while racefail is annoying and I didn't want to go see the movie for that reason, this trailer has really convinced me I don't want to go see it. I mean it involves ILM, and that kid's bending is really impressive, but...

I'll probably just end up downloading it and watching it that way.
