Breathe (slowly)
I need a new all-of-the-Gaang-icon.
But this...
This fic is my season three.
and now I am going to gush about it, because it makes me so happy.
I just left one of the gushiest reviews I think I've ever written for a fanfic. EVER. And it's not even romantic! I mean, I made a frickin' numbered list. This is bad. I am so terribly, terribly afraid that the end is approaching, and then where shall I be?
But seriously, I am convinced that this author (ignore the fact that her pen name is xcgirl08) has an inside link to the Nick studios and is secretly novelizing the plot for season 3.
The real thing about this fic is that it has what movies and shows inherently cannot have: a real inside look into all of the characters' heads. And she uses this ability masterfully, creating circles and flashbacks and foreshadowings and character development and...I mean, there's really...no. This is it. This is what Avatar is all about.
She switches effortlessly from incredibly visual (through sparing but precise use of language) fight scenes to giggly fluff scenes to emotional struggle scenes to flashbacks to witty banter to fights again. The characters are all IC--they grow, of course, according to what happens throughout the fic, but it's completely in keeping with the basic characters themselves. She also brings back minor characters and puts them to good use, giving resolution with them that's totally satisfying. Her few side OCs are also fantastic. I mean, she has a masterful knowledge of the show itself, and everyone and everything that's shown up in it, even if she doesn't know all the names.
It's not overtly shippy, but there are ships, but they're so subtly done it really doesn't detract from what's going on in the fic at all--very realistically done. (And, just a fair warning, completely in keeping with my own shipping lines. But even with that, people who don't support the ships are still reading anyway, because it's Just That Good)
Yep. This fic is why I didn't get any homework done on Thursday.
I think I'll just go lay down my pen now.
Did I mention it's going to be over 35 chapters long, and that the chapters get progressively longer, but no slower?
Why are you still sitting here, reading my livejournal? Go READ IT NOW.

This contains several spoilers for the fic, and believe me, you do not want to be spoiled. Really, half the fun of this fic is its plot: the twists, the turns, the cliches that are played out, the cliches that are turned on their heads, how everything draws together...yeah.
I was reading the reviews for it, though, and came across this one...
from Dr. Nitro the Element Emperor:
I sat on my throne on the NITRO EXECUTER and was currently viewing files on the latest observations on various universes. I was liking what was happening, but as soon as a certain part came up, I shut off the files in a fury. I immedietely called for a text message to be sent to that dimension's "God".
I readied the camera, and began my review.

"Hello (looks at file) xcgirl08...suffice to say, I was rather enjoying the plot. Things were going smoothly. BUT!! When you stated that it was going to be a Taang story, all support was lost. This happenned just a few minutes ago and I am very dipleased. I may just come to your little dimension and (looks at fanfiction dictionary) bash it. I don't like Taang. It is so unnatural that, well, I absolutely HATE IT YOU FRIGGIN' BASTARD! YOU ROBBED ME OF A STORY THAT COULD POTENTALLY BE ONE OF THE BEST!...excuse me for the loss of control, but I will say that when I am able to submit stories (in 3 days) I may just pay a visit to your Fan-fic and screw the entire universe.
Don't say I didn't warn you.
FYI: I have an army and an empire.

I stopped the camera, and sent it to this "xcgirl08" character and immediately called up the ship's captain.
"What is it, sir?", the captian asked.
"Plot a course for the zone we set aside for dimensional warps. We will warp to the "Book 3: Fire" Dimension. How long will it be until we reach the zone?", I ordered.
"Hm...if all goes well, about 3 days.", the captain calculated.
"Excellent."
A laugh resounded throughout the chamber.
....all that, to bash a fic? ...Some people have a swelled head.
oh, wow, they had another one in the next chapter. Also responding to someone who said they "took out a gun and shot all the ebil reviews." Which really, I can't blame them. I mean, stupidest review ever. (Or up there, at least.)
hm, one review pointed out that getting Iroh to say "You'll have to ask him about how he got the scar" was a cliched device, and not entirely keeping with Iroh's character.
1) I think if you're writing Zutara, though, Iroh would want to encourage intimacy between the two, and leave it to Zuko to talk to her.
2) SPOILER that's now how she finds out anyway...oh, I didn't even see that as being cliched, but now with full 20/20, it was, but she twisted it. This author owns my soul. END SPOILER
Ah, yes, the Christian symbolism. It's a bit jarring, but I think it works, and she's mostly abandoned it by this point. The big baddie isn't Satan, though. Just an uberspirit, I think.
And reading through these reviews--it's very obvious, from the way the story ends up going, that she's been reading her reviews and taking them into consideration.
Take, for instance, this one: "Sokka should have a little adventure with Iroh sometime. Maybe they solve a mystery together, or fix or find something."
SPOILER And within the next two chapters, Sokka and Iroh blow something up together, in what I thought was one of the funniest scenes in the entire fic--very visual, but also hilarious. END SPOILER Which just goes to show how very flexible she is in writing this, too, which I think is amazing, considering how she's also having all the threads pull together at the same time, and that's usually something that requires some rigidness.
Haha, there's this one reviewer named J, who I like a lot and agree with most of them time, who wasn't such a fan of the SPOILER dragon at the end of the chapter...but his review for the next chapter, while saying I still don't like dragons, was still totally rocked by it. END SPOILER Because it was just that awesome.
