so overall there's only one book on here that I picked up on a total whim (oh and I bought a book at Wal-Mart the other day because it was on sale and the narrative voice reminded me vaguely of Doctrine of the Labyrinths although I do not expect it to be nearly that good) but still, progress! Also I bravefully (it's totally a word shut up) faced the librarian with my stack of Books For Teens and then talked about how I was a newlywed WOOOOOOOOOOOOO NO SHAME

So now everybody (

beth_shulman) now that I'm not a full-time teacher and have time on my hands to do things like read for pleasure if I've ever mentioned thinking a book looked interesting (

brandy_painter) or if you think there's something I should read, TELL ME. I can bus books in from all over Jefferson Country.

Also I have choir practice tonight! Now...if only I hadn't forgotten to grab a frozen meal to eat...sigh.

Eeeeeee, your reading list sounds super awesome! And do talk to me about the Demon's Lexicon series; I didn't really get into it until Covenant, but that book sucked me right in, and the final book in the trilogy is narrated by one of my favorite characters. :)

While you're reading, don't forget *children's* books, especially older ones that are excellent. I think I know at least three people (peggymwtchex) who will agree that if you haven't read Eloise Jarvis McGraw's MOCCASIN TRAIL, you ought to. In fact, hit several of the older Newbery Medal and Honor books - *if* you can get them. (McGraw's other books are also excellent, as for example MARA, DAUGHTER OF THE NILE; CROWN FIRE; SAWDUST IN HIS SHOES; but good luck finding the last two). And don't forget Rosemary Sutcliff (smile at Bonnie Dundee in my icon), which could I suppose be considered "young adult" but they were written long before that name came to be so I call them children's books.

I second all of Beth's recs. Except for maybe The Demon King but I think I need to reread that one. Maybe I was just in a weird mood and that is why it didn't impress me? Everyone else seems to love it lots.

Vorkosigan Saga!

We discussed it at your wedding, you didn't come up with a good argument not to read it, READ. It will suck you in for real. I had to pull an all nighter last year because I had a lab report due and I reread Memory instead. REREAD. That is how much is sucks you in. Like MWT's books, only longer. And in space.

Vorkosigan Saga is very good. I enjoyed it. And then you can go through and analyze how Pope John Paul II's theology of the body applies to it.

Hahahaha the reason I haven't read beyond the first two (Cordelia's Honor and whatever followed it) is because I had serious serious moral issues with her attitude towards pregnancy, etc. I don't remember what her attitude was exactly, but I remember being disturbed and thinking she was being incredibly selfish and missing the whole point WHOOPS. Maybe Miles wouldn't bother me as much?

Yes, that was one of the things that creeped me out. Not to mention the fact that it made no sense at all. As one goes through the series one finds that they can do just about anything - clone people, bring them back from the dead, and a whole bunch of other things. Oh, but *pregnancy* is just so terribly *dangerous* that we simply *can't* just bear babies the normal way; no, no, we must use the uterine replicator, and we must screen them for imperfections ahead of time..." Ewk. And it gets a lot worse after the first two books.

Seriously, though, if I could pick one book's narrative style and prose that I'd like to write, it would be THAT BOOK.

All the clever lines from the animated movie were lifted from the book, and the book is even more so. God, I want to reread it again now.
