1. part of her frustration with the gods stems from what happened to Gen, and the fact that she secretly admired Hephestia before that happened--she thought that in imitating her, she had achieved a kind of kinship with her, one that didn't require worship, and so it cut her deeply to not only be betrayed (or at least to have Gen be betrayed), but also to have to give in and acknowledge her own mortality.

or something like that. I have an image in my head of the first tie Attolia sees the statue of Hephestia in the temple in Eddis, and just being...overwhelmed.
