BECAUSE I CAN

so, we're trying to find the Alice miniseries online to watch, because it is supposed to be adorable, but its distributor is being a dumbface and taking it off YouTube. Whilst questing for it, I went to syfy.com, and then, on a whim, wandered down to their "feedback" link, and sent them the following email:

To Whomever It May Concern,

I have yet to hear of any legitimate reason for turning the name of the SciFi channel into some thirteen-year-old girl's idea of a cutsy nickname. The rebranding fails to reach out to either a new audience who might have been "turned off" at the thought of science fiction, due to its inanity, or to actual science fiction fans, who, as I'm sure you know, are horrified at what you have done to their beloved genre's nickname. It is obviously far too late to stop your descent into madness, but I just thought I would let you know, a little piece of me dies every time I channel surf past you.

Sincerely,
[Jade Sabre]
science fiction fan

...man, that felt good.

(p.s. a little piece of me really does die. Or at least feel like the entire SciFi network is poking it with a large, shame-inducing stick. WHY CAN'T YOU BE TRUE TO YOUR ROOTS, SYFY. WHY SO ASHAMED. it is not like they even decided to change their name to "syfy" and then stop doing ridiculous alien disaster movies.)

......I like the new name. I think it's cute.

It makes me think of venereal disease.

And I'm not even Polish. (Yes, "syfy" is not only the Polish slang for syphilis, it's kind of the all purpose equivalent for icky stuff in the way the way we might use "crap" or "shit.") (From what I've gleaned as a non-speaker of Polish listening to other people discuss the word.)

I approve of this letter. Also, I'm pretty sure that miniseries is at ninjavideo.net, as I've been looking for it too. We should watch it together! :D

Haha ohhhh syfy...I enjoy some of their programming. Like "Warehouse 13" and "Tin Man." That being said, SyFy reminds me of like some sort of cutesy celebrity couple nickname, a la Brangelina. Like Sylvia/Fynn (or something...don't mind me, i'm tired).

Love the letter! have you checked Sidereel for links to this miniseries?

I agree with that letter. I also agree with Sylvia/Fynn and I will now call the Sci Fi channel Sylvia/Fynn.

YAY JADE!

I don't watch the channel (or any tv much except on weekends at my mom's house), but when I saw the SyFy thing I got queasy.

If they had to change it, they could've made it PsiPhi (only used the actual Greek letters which I don't know how to type).

Maybe a disassociation between Syfy and actual science fiction might be good considering how these days they seem to playing wrestling and movies about giant spider monsters instead of quality television?
