Not Yet by Lightning, Chapter 1

Whelp, folks, I know I've been talking big for a while now, but it's FINALLY HERE!
That's right, my epically long (if 55K is epic) fanfiction based on the main plot of the Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign is finally up and running! Now, I know y'all are all just falling over yourselves to read it, but there might be some lingering questions in your mind, such as "What the heck is Neverwinter Nights all about?" or "What's a tiefling again?"
So here's the deal. If you want to read it (and some of y'all PROMISED you would *puppy eyes* thought of course you don't have to, but just think about what a welcomeprocrastination tool homework break it could be...), I'm going to be writing brief summaries of the main plot action that I left out of my fic here at the LJ, and then posting a link to the chapter. That way you (hopefully) won't be totally lost; the fic is designed as a series of...snippets, I guess, of a couple of my own invented subplots that rely on the main plot and intersect with it but don't cover every aspect of it. Some of the scenes take dialogue directly from the game and then tweaked, others are completely my own; I'll be sure to let you know which is which.
Now, please enjoy Not Yet by Lightning, Chapter 1.

For now, though, here's the background you need...
The story is set in the northeast corner of the continent known in the D&D world as Faerûn. This area is known as the Sword Coast, and among its major cities are Luskan (home of pirates and wizards, generally considered eeeeeeeevil) and Neverwinter (home of trade and...other stuff, generally consider goooooooood if overly bureaucratic). Seeing as this is a Dungeons and Dragons world, all of the things you find in D&D are in this world. There are different races and classes (or professions), different kinds of magic (wizards' bookish, sorcerers' natural talent, and warlocks'...deals with devils? Still not sure on that one. Don't care. *is D&D purist*), and different gods (Mask, evil god of deception, or Tyr, good god of justice). You can google any of this stuff and find out way more than you could ever want to know about it.
This is a map of the game's main area. The funny-looking eyeballs at the north of the screen represent districts of the very large city of Neverwinter. The Docks District is particularly known for being a rough, rather criminally-run kind of place. Straight south of that, south of the little farm field, is the town of Highcliff. Follow the coast south from that to the icon that looks like Highcliff's icon, and that's West Harbor. West Harbor is a little farming village in the middle of a huge swamp known (oh-so-creatively) as the Mere of Dead Men because...there are dead people in the water. Luskan, though not on this map, is north of Neverwinter.
Years and years before the story begins, West Harbor is the site of a major battle. No one quite knows who was fighting, or what it was about, but the village was all but destroyed and anyone who stayed behind died. Those who returned discovered a strange scar on the land, and a few silver shards, which they examined but which didn't appear to be anything more than silver. Still, being fairly superstitious folk (and for good reason), they hid the shards in some ancient ruins in the swamp, and then set about rebuilding the village.
I believe that's all you need to know for this first chapter. That being said, feel free to ask away with the questions. And of course, please review! I don't care if you leave reviews here or over at ff.net; my only suggestion would be that it's easier to have ongoing conversations here on LJ than it is to have them over at ff.net. :-)
