Steve Jobs passed away yesterday.

So Facebook clued me in, although I had to scroll a ways to get to it, and I am just, like, in shock. I don't even use Apple products. Macs annoy me, and I've never even used iTunes, much less an iPod. But still. What.

My dad said, when he stepped down as CEO in August, that he had basically worked until he had created the computer he'd always wanted to create. Once upon a time when Dad and I were making an eight-hour road trip to visit a college, he gave me a long and detailed lecture about the history of the computer industry, which included things like "crazy Steve Jobs wanted to make a computer with no mouse or keyboard! yeah that was nuts." ("Also people were just taking the code for Windows and running it backwards and marketing it as a completely different product, 'cause there weren't any copyright laws in effect yet.")

but hey! look at the iPad.

Wild.

Rest in peace, Mr. Jobs.

has passed away.

magical funeral party in her honor in the comments.

(for the record, even beyond all of the amazing books she read [as if that isn't enough!], as Quark just reminded me, DWJ is the reason we know and love MWT.)

(man I am SAD.)

So I heard this morning on the radio that Leslie Nielson had passed away, and I almost called Quark except I thought she was in class. Best response seen so far: a coworker on Facebook: "He will Shirley be missed."

EVEN MORE SADNESS HAS COME MY WAY, however, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda: Irvin Kershner has passed away. This makes me very sad. Clearly, a movie-watching party in his honor is in order.

Mary Travers from Peter, Paul, and Mary passed away today.

(here you go, [livejournal.com profile] mysteree_80, someone who's both famous AND did good during her life.)

...man we listened to a Peter, Paul, and Mary CD on the way up to school this year. And their Christmas album is one of my perennial favorites, and their records! We still listen to them on album! And, like, what. what.

*is out of words*

I'm not even sure how I feel about this at this point, but

Patrick Swayze passed away today.

...oh and RPattz and KStew are engaged making out in front of large groups of people? That actually almost cheers me up.

Also there is a fire and God only knows what else going on outside the window.

[insert profanity about Plato here]

edit: WHAT THE HELL FEDERER. HOW COULD YOU LOSE.

son of adam edit: THIS THREAD CONTAINS SO MUCH WIN no matter what Quark says.

Ted Kennedy passed away last night.

And seriously, [livejournal.com profile] philia_fan was the first person I heard it from, and it's...five forty in the afternoon? Wow.

in other news, Ted Kennedy passed away this morning.

...wow.
jade_sabre: (potc: wtf?)
To add another level of WTF universe?ness to this weekend, I have another report for you:

Billy Mays passed away this morning.

...he's the OxyClean guy. And it seems like such a--a little thing, but...like, I've never thought about the person doing commercials being dead. And like, especially him. His voice was loud, and annoying, and...it will never create a new commercial to annoy us.

...

This just feels weird, now.
jade_sabre: (p&p: Mrs. Bennet WTF?)
Just the other day, I was thinking about how I haven't used my "the deaths of famous people" tag in a while, and then I heard that

Ed McMahon had passed away

but by the time I found out I figured it was old news.

And then today I get on and was sad to find out that Farrah Fawcett, whose bangs (fringe for the Brits) I will always admire, has also passed away.

And then my mother calls me and says MICHAEL JACKSON'S DEAD to which I responded WTF THAT IS REALLY SAD and since this is even more recent than Ms. Fawcett, I a) am posting about it and b) apologize for the fact that you're probably going to hear about it on your f-list for the next couple of days. I think the news might have broken LJ--when I first got on, it was undergoing "emergency maintenance."

In other news, Malone says to tell you she's pretty, and QUARKIE IS DONE WITH THE OAT YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY CONGRATULATIONS MA CHERIE.

this is Jade, over and out.

Natasha Richardson passed away today.  I'm not entirely sure what happened, other than the fact that she hit her head while skiing a couple of days ago, but it's still pretty sad.
jade_sabre: (sadness)
and since I'm coming upon this in a timely fashion, I'll actually post about it.

John Updike died today.

I hear he's best known for his Rabbit books, which I haven't read, but my first exposure to him was a poem I read in 9th grade English, and hated.  Guess it's time to give him another chance.

DEAD.

ADSLKFJA;DSFJAS I MEAN I KNEW HE WAS OLD BUT THIS IS UNEXPECTED.

I'm kinda in shock.  I'll get back to y'all on this one.

EDIT:  [profile] urthstripe32 totally sucks at supporting my surprise.
jade_sabre: (sadness)
Gosh dang it all.  [profile] philia_fan just alerted me to the fact that Paul Scofield, the original Thomas in A Man for All Seasons, passed away today

(Interestingly enough, the publication date on that article is tomorrow.  Fascinating.)

Arthur C. Clarke died today.

Having only seen 2010 (and not really understood it), and having never read any of the books, my grief is somewhat understated, but I'm still sad.

1.  A meme!  Probably to be completed after spring break, but it amuses me, so...
Name a character and I'll tell you how he/she lost his/her virginity.

2.  Gary Gygax, creator of D&D and thus person responsible for many of my creative hijinx, died today.  :-(
edit:  Rich Burlew has an excellent tribute on Order of the Stick today.

HEATH LEDGER IS DEAD.

So is Bobby Fisher.

...what the hell, man?
jade_sabre: (lost)
Thank you, once again, f-list, for your timely obituary notices.

Robert Jordan died today.

Apparently about an hour ago.

This is breaking news, people.  As of this moment, Wikipedia doesn't even know.

Am trying to get onto his blog now.

I haven't read any of his books, but I've heard of the love/hate struggle people seem to have with their longevity.  Time to read, I guess.

edit:  A better link with more information.
