NOBODY IS POSTING (INCLUDING ME)

who actually still visits this site on a regular basis? And what, exactly, is that regular basis? This is just me being curious I'm not going to go anywhere and half of us are also Facebook friends but you know.

ALSO if you are not spending time here, are you spending it on another site, or are you too busy being consumed with ~*~real life~*~?

also I am trying to decide which project I should work on over this whole nine-month deployment thing. I am slowly getting more settled and accepting that This Is My Life ("yeah! I spent the majority of my first year of marriage apart from my husband! so much for 'alone time before having children'" mostly I jest but it is partially true sob) and so once I beat ME2 and then ME3 and Kaidan comes back and tells me he's sorry and he loves me and I can say IT'S OKAY, I LOVED YOU ALL ALONG much to Quark's disgust as that happens and I get on a schedule (studying Old English? Who has to study for a...language course...sob) I will be WRITING and I have to finish Godbaby fic

(snippet NO STEALING: The pounding grows quieter. I am afraid to look over the wall, and I do not know why. I have only ever spoken to Mother and to the elves. Mother taught me a greeting, but I do not know if the girl—if it is a girl—will understand me. And she is only one person, and Mother told me to find a town. I think that if I wait, she and the animals will go away. I am good at sitting still for hours, at hiding from the sight of those around me. I will wait.

The grass itches at my hands, but I do not move. The smell of the animals is strong and unpleasant, but I do not cough. The sun becomes brighter and brighter in the sky, and sweat drips into my eyes, and I barely blink. I am not here, I think. I think of nothing else.
)

but also I want to work on a novel so that WP has something to read that is my fanfiction. Top choices are Goblin Novel (probably he would like it best, but it needs serious serious work because I wrote it during first semester senior year which was INSANE and Pictash spends a lot of time in a library doing research) and 2010 NaNo That Went Nowhere (the two main characters don't have names, also they are basically a younger version of Nevalle and Tanithar) (her name is either Theresa or Tabitha, but Tabitha is too close to Tanithar and I don't like the way Theresa looks, though I like the sound of it) (anyway it's my Generic Fantasy Novel in the same way that the Goblin Novel is my Subversion of the Generic Fantasy Novel). SUGGESTIONS WELCOME.

okay okay time to go eat lunch and borrow Quark's shower and pay my rent and get a library card WOOT.

eta: MY UPSTAIRS NEIGHBOR IS WATCHING SLEEPING BEAUTY is it wrong to want to knock on their door and tell them how cool they are. (Actually I think they have small children, but still. This has made my early afternoon.)

but better late than never, right?

A friend of mine had Tom Wolfe speak at her graduation, and she will always remember it because he went from studies about monkeys having sex to Wernher Von Braun in approximately 1.5 seconds. I was lucky enough to have Brian Williams, and I will remember him for other reasons, which I am sharing with you here:

jade_sabre: (robot unicorn attack)
sadly not by me, but still awesome.

I think I am avoiding posting about how my days have been going because, um, if I did I would have to start thinking about how I'm graduating, and then I would cry all over my laptop. So instead we are all being WEIRDLY MOODY and getting UPSET ABOUT RANDOM THINGS like HOW FLIPPING CASTLE/BECKETT IS BEATING PUCK/RACHEL HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY CHEMISTRY

as we were saying, Castle basically relies on the success of other shows (e.g. Bones and The Mentalist), which doesn't make it bad, but doesn't make it compelling to those who are fans of the other shows (especially if the other shows actually have chemistry, see Bones). Anyway vote for Zutara, etc. etc., show Usagi/Mamoru (Sailor Moon/Tuxedo Mask) some love because they are hurting. I think so far those are the only ones I'm really worried about (not that there aren't other ships in there that I love, but so far everyone is doing okay.)

(Having to pick between Mulan/Shang and Tiana/Naveen based on hotness is pretty cruel though. Both couples are pretty smoking.)

Anyway! On the subject of Puck/Rachel, which is my Glee OTP (although I am really fond of this Jesse/Rachel thing that's going on because Rachel just looks so happy. Also I am really fond of the last two episodes of Glee because, aside from Will, it's actually been...watchable). Ariel has been sending me links to fic as rewards for finishing my homework (one paper left!), and with a link to this one (haven't read yet, have to hang up Disney pictures first...and then probably, like, color more...), she sent me the following meta:

[note: this was clearly written while under the influence of lots of Puck's POV fic. Just sayin'.]

cut for hilarious amounts of Puckspeak )

SO, fellow watchers-of-Glee/sellouts-like-me, thoughts? Anyone else notice these trends in Puck fic? Anyone more familiar with the first nine episodes than I am want to let me know what we see of Puck's character? PLEASE, DISCUSS.

1) So, in the song "Bad Romance," which I love a lot and which you should listen to, she repeats the line "I don't wanna be friends" multiple times.

Having listened to the song, do you think this line refers to
a) the fact that she wanted a solely sexual relationship
or
b) the fact that they are friends but she wants to be more?

I am doing an informal poll, and your input is welcome.

2) I wrote my Nietzsche paper in an hour (literally) and then lo and behold my knee started going all crazy on me and my good knee started tickling and so I ended up emailing the paper in and sitting on my futon with an ice pack, WOE.

3) I have grown very attached to this cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist," in a "I listen to this over and over again and want to write."

4) Speaking of writing, this is me NOT starting my post-season-3 Katara fic that I spent three hours plotting the other night with [livejournal.com profile] nessismore. (Y'all, I hit all the plot points. I even, like, made decisions, where normally I just keep changing it over and over in my head--I had to pick and go.) I really ought to go ahead and get the prologue down before I forget it.

5) I haven't talked about my life in forever, but I haven't really had any crazy adventures or done anything particularly fun lately. I mean, I've had fun, but I've also had a lot of long conversations that amount to "I am screwed once I leave this institution," and that's just not much fun to talk about.

6) A Room with a View is up on YouTube in its entirety, JUST SAYING, if you want to celebrate mah birfday the way I will be celebrating it. (Singing along to "O Mio Babbino Caro" is optional but encouraged. Bonus points if you can do a crazy operatic soprano not-glissando between those two syllables of "bello.")

7) Sophos's face is up, and it is appropriately pretty.

8) Idk, is there anything y'all want to hear about from me?

9) I took Pictash into the creative writing club and they liked him! (He is the singer in this post.)

10) As for that icon meme everyone's been doing, here's my answers from September. (Not!surprise: my answers are mostly the same.)

so! to clear up any confusion, biopsy turned into synovectomy but they only took out the part of my synovium that was causing problems, so HOPEFULLY once I'm all better from having stitches in my leg I will be really all better. Shirley the scooter is mine until May, though, so, uh, THINGS I WILL BE USING TO GET TO THE LIBRARY.

Am still laid up, but on ibuprofen today and so feeling less grumpy and more human. Which, alas, means I ought to actually do some homework today, woe.

Also I started posting a new fanfic about a month ago. Um, you don't have to know the storyline to follow it, at least I don't think so? Anyway it is called Falling Slowly and I wrote it like over a year ago but, uh, if anyone feels like reading something I've written that's actually complete, well, there you have it.

Time to go read the last fifty pages of A Room with a View, then reread bits of The Voyage Out, then start looking at actual criticism, le sigh...

IT BE TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY, YE SCURY DOGS, SO I BE EXPECTIN' Y'ALL NOT TO DISAPPOINT IN YER COMMENTS AND OTHER WORD-LIKE PURSUITS.

This mornin' I awoke to the fine melodies of my first mate's alarm, which plays the strains of POTC: CBP to rouse us from our not-so-drunken slumbers. O' course, that was at an indecent hour, so I ordered her to shoot the damn machine and returned to my hammock.

Now I myself be in me quarters waitin' for me first matey to awake so that we may scrounge about fer our breakfast before terrorizing tourists out o' their pocket money.

(BUT SIR, WE ONLY WISH TO PURCHASE A BRAT TO SUPPORT THIS FINE STUDENT ORGANIZATION, they say.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRR, reply I, MY STUDENT ORGANIZATION BE NEEDIN' IT MORE THAN YE. NOW BE ON YER WAY BEFORE I START ACCUSIN' YEH OF BEING FANS OF THE NOT-SO-DREAD SPARRRRRRRRRRRTANS.)

Also I be sailin' on the library website, lookin' for bounteous articles comparin' the great tale of adventure Notorious to the not-as-great-but-still-darrrrrrrrrrrrrrn-good tale North by Northwest, because I decided that this would be a good way to commence my Saturrrrrrrrrrrrrday.

Oh fine day! The yellow-bellied matey has arisen! PILLAGE TIME.

GO IRISH! KEELHAUL SPARTANS!

okay so I'm only watching the broadcast I'm not actually there because getting a ticket was harder than like a cell bio class (okay maybe not quite that hard), but I would just like to say.

PRESIDENT JENKINS

IS A BAMF

AND I LOVE HIM.

surprise of the day? President Obama's speech was awesome, but Fr. Jenkins's was better.

one dude tried to disrupt the speech, and people booed him, and President Obama said it was all right, we weren't going to avoid difficult things, and then when the guy kept talking, the seniors stood and chanted WE ARE ND.

you hear that, crazy people?

WE ARE ND.

eta:  Dude even frickin' Judge Noonan, whose speech I was doubting at the beginning, turned out to be TOTALLY AWESOME.  Like duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.  Truth will out.  I am unspeakably satisfied, even in my dissatisfactions.

I would just like to end by sharing the second reading and the Gospel today, because they are even more awesome than all of the awesome that was these commencement speeches combined.

we have been told, we've seen his face and heard his voice alive in our hearts: live in my love with all your heart. as the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. )

so basically for my Brit Lit II class I have to do this "semi-weekly writings" where I reflect on the readings we've done since the last one we turned in, but uh, as I turned in my last one back in February, I had a lot to catch up on. But this way I was able to examine trends and also just have fun talking about literature.

But just to give y'all an idea of what I've been reading, and again, what I want to do with my life, I'm posting it. Because it was awesome.

dear professor... )
jade_sabre: (firefly: Inara crying)
1)  Things like this at once tick me off and make me thumb my nose at people who get applications on Facebook.  Granted, just about everything's technically an application these days, but it reminds me of way back when, when I got my first invitation to become a zombie and tootled over to get the application.  "Hi there!" the application thingie said.  "Prepare to have all sorts of fun with your friends BY GIVING OUT YOUR INFORMATION TO A RANDOM THIRD PARTY."

"Uh, no," I said, and that was the end of that.  And so, from my morally superior situation, I laugh at everyone who adds every application known to mankind.  Dear God, was I this much of a snob in high school?

2)  Everyone please say a prayer/light a candle for the repose of the soul of my laptop.  According to Mr. OIT Man on the phone today, there is something called a "partition" that is distinctly missing from my hard drive, and as a "partition" is the first step to "being able to load things onto a hard drive," it appears that my disc has been completely wiped clean.  Now, I haven't let other people (i.e. my father/any geek friends I have hanging around here) get their hands on it too, but, uh, thank goodness I loaded my Fiction and Fanfiction folders onto my thumb drive?

I have this empty spot in my soul, next to the black mark signaling it's been almost a year since I went to confession and right between my heart and my sternum.  I'll, uh, let you know how it goes.

jade_sabre: (gwtw: scarlett giggle)
so today in class my fiction writing professor passed around a bag full of little white pills and instructed each of us to take one.

Turns out they were Lactaid pills, to ward off the cheese.

he then went on to describe the literary landscape of America (New England:  where stories are always set in collegetowns in the fall, and at least one character is a professor; Southwest, where everything is New Age and people hug rocks), and described the South as "trailer parks and inbreeding."  I was all prepared to protest when I remembered that my response for last week's story was Morgan/Arthur.  Oops.

eh?

jade_sabre: (potc: wtf?)
I'm pretty sure I just saw a commercial for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups using "Jupiter" as the music.  In which the words appeared in conjunction with accented notes in the music.

On a completely different note, the last few chapters of the Monologion are completely crazy, but there is something pretty impressive about that last chapter, where Anselm unveils the final step:  this supreme nature we've been talking about...is GOD.  There's just such a sense of relief that he finally sits down and says what he's been working towards since chapter one.

edited to add:  this link from [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes .  For the two married Amandas on my list, along with anyone who can sympathy with the "writer/programmer" ship.

yet another edit:  I am so frickin' sick of these "high fructose corn syrup is just the same as sugar and is fine in moderation!" commercials.  Apparently I missed the earlier campaign of "OMG HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS OF THE DEVIL!!1!" commercials.  But regardless of its health implications (on the subject of which I am fuzzy), the fact that such a high percentage of our food relies on one product (i.e. corn) for its base means that if a corn blight comes we'll be worse off than Ireland during the potato famine.

Also, Coke tastes better with regular sugar.  Which is clearly the most important issue of all.

jade_sabre: (potc: finally)
Y'all I am having the worst academic day ever.

I was late to Fiction Writing, totally read the wrong section for 19th Century Philo and thus spent the entire class going WHERE DID HE SAY THAT?, and am now utterly failing to read the Dryden poems I'm supposed to be reading (to be fair, I'm halfway through Absalom and Achitophel, but still).

BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE BRIAN WILLIAMS AND TOM BROKAW HAVE BEEN TELLING ME ALL ABOUT HOW BARACK OBAMA IS OUR PRESIDENT NOW.

P.S.  I keep bursting into tears randomly, and looking for people to hug.  I wonder where everyone is?  Oh well, we're having a party in like half an hour, maybe there will be people to hug there.

P.P.S.  Y'all I can't even believe it's real.  Except it IS.

P.P.P.S.  That Lunar Rover machine thing?  SLICK.  *applauds*

P.P.P.P.S.  I like how Michelle brought the Bushes a housewarming present.  And I do agree that George knows how to make an exit.  I'm excited that they get to go back to Texas.  It's really where he's wanted to be, all along.

P.P.P.P.P.S.  SO HAPPY.

mainly because I'm trying something new this semester called doing all my reading for all my classes, and holy crap, it takes up a lot of time.  No wonder I haven't done this before.

The Paladin

Ninja, Monkey, Punk, Clown

Paladins are vigilant and outgoing, enjoying the exploration of ideas and people and seeing everything and everyone as part of a cosmic whole. While they often give in to the wishes of parents, friends and authority figures (especially those symbolic of some ideal), they generally dislike bureaucracy, and are fond of launching crusades against such obstacles to their beliefs. They genuinely want to help others, but expect to be liked and admired in return (everything being part of the same whole, this is not surprising). While they are open to learning about new ideas, and meeting new people, they are often quick to discard most ideas as not fitting in with their own philosophies, and often forget older friends to focus on new ones. Yet they are pleasant and fun to work with, and use their strong convictions and social skills to persuade others of the rightness of their ideas. Their opinions of others and need for "return on investment" can leave them open to being wounded by uncaring individuals, and they have difficulty being alone, when they are forced to dwell on their feelings (they are quite the romantics!).

Paladins often tend towards Paranoid behavior, distrusting others and assuming that everyone is malevolent and "out to harm them." They question the loyalty of others (including close friends), and read hidden meanings into even benign events. Reluctant to confide in those close to them, they become easy to anger, quick to counterattack, and hold grudges for lengthy periods of time.

Famous paladin types include Mark Twain, Will Rogers, Carol Burnett, Paul Harvey and Bill Cosby.

So my paper is arguing (partially) that Cynthia Wolff is wrong when she says in her article "Who is the Narrator of Vanity Fair and Where is He Standing?" that the narrator's ambiguity shows that he is a weak character.  So I search JSTOR and can't find any record of anyone else citing this paper, so I decide to google "Cynthia Wolff" and "Vanity Fair" to see if anything comes up.

And what I get is this.  Turns out a lot of Britney Spears quick-fact sites include the facts that she posed naked for the magazine Vanity Fair and that her engagement ring was designed by one Cynthia Wolff on the same page.  Huh.
