I'm pretty sure I just saw a commercial for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups using "Jupiter" as the music.  In which the words appeared in conjunction with accented notes in the music.

On a completely different note, the last few chapters of the Monologion are completely crazy, but there is something pretty impressive about that last chapter, where Anselm unveils the final step:  this supreme nature we've been talking about...is GOD.  There's just such a sense of relief that he finally sits down and says what he's been working towards since chapter one.

yet another edit:  I am so frickin' sick of these "high fructose corn syrup is just the same as sugar and is fine in moderation!" commercials.  Apparently I missed the earlier campaign of "OMG HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS OF THE DEVIL!!1!" commercials.  But regardless of its health implications (on the subject of which I am fuzzy), the fact that such a high percentage of our food relies on one product (i.e. corn) for its base means that if a corn blight comes we'll be worse off than Ireland during the potato famine.

Also, Coke tastes better with regular sugar.  Which is clearly the most important issue of all.

That comparing programming languages to literary devices is pretty much spot on, and the best thing ever. I develop in PHP and I should be insulted about what they say what it's equivalent to in the writing world, but, uhh, it pays my bills.

I don't watch enough TV to know what commercials are on, but I've youtubed the "HFCS is cool in moderation!" commercials and they are inane. I dunno if there was an "HFCS is the devil" campaign, but there should be, because it is.

Recently there was a publication that notes that some HFCS plants include a process that requires mercury, and sure enough, there are trace amounts of mercury in some HFCS. Not enough to matter, but if we're going to lie and twist things like the corn-lobbyists, why not.

Biochemically, the problem with HFCS is that it doesn't satisfy hunger the way real fructose/sucrose does. Infrastructurally, it sucks because it screws with the price and quality of corn (but that's only one part of that story...). Boo all around.

it's also metabolized differently from sugar, and does evil things to both your blood sugar level and the way your body stores fat.

and jade, just why are you seeing so many commercials these days? hmmmm? I thought you were suppose to be STUDYING. and attending CLASSES.

Yay! Now I will have real information to yell at the TV while watching these commercials.

Mostly, they're just SO BADLY DONE, with such BLATANT LOBBY FUNDING, that they kind of make me want to shoot people.

These commercials were all seen during the same 1-hour TV-viewing period, i.e., that of the Gilmore Girls, which comes on every day at 11 and which I only watch three times a week. So nyyyyyyyyyyyyyah. :-b

There's actually a number of studies both vilifying and defending HFCS. From my understanding, most of the more recent ones indicate that it's not that great, but not THAT bad either. Then again, it's become such a highly politicized item that you should take most of what you hear about it with a grain of salt.

From what I've heard, one of the main problems with high fructose corn syrup is that it stops some signal getting sent that lets you know you're full. So that's why so many of us just keep eating and eating. I'm not saying it's the only reason we're so gluttonous, but it helps... or hurts. XD

And that second edit is pretty much why I do my own cooking and avoid a lot of the heavily-processed stuff when I can.

If I need a Masters in Chemistry to figure out what it is you're putting in my food, and we haven't done any research that shows what the stuff does to you in the long run?

And if a corn blight comes? WOO HOO! No more of this 'high fructose kill-you' stuff in my drinks.

I think we can all agree that's a win.

And if we have to use babies to sweeten our food (because the Irish know that babies are nature's solution to famine) then so be it.
