NOBODY IS POSTING (INCLUDING ME)

who actually still visits this site on a regular basis? And what, exactly, is that regular basis? This is just me being curious I'm not going to go anywhere and half of us are also Facebook friends but you know.

ALSO if you are not spending time here, are you spending it on another site, or are you too busy being consumed with ~*~real life~*~?

also I am trying to decide which project I should work on over this whole nine-month deployment thing. I am slowly getting more settled and accepting that This Is My Life ("yeah! I spent the majority of my first year of marriage apart from my husband! so much for 'alone time before having children'" mostly I jest but it is partially true sob) and so once I beat ME2 and then ME3 and Kaidan comes back and tells me he's sorry and he loves me and I can say IT'S OKAY, I LOVED YOU ALL ALONG much to Quark's disgust as that happens and I get on a schedule (studying Old English? Who has to study for a...language course...sob) I will be WRITING and I have to finish Godbaby fic

(snippet NO STEALING: The pounding grows quieter. I am afraid to look over the wall, and I do not know why. I have only ever spoken to Mother and to the elves. Mother taught me a greeting, but I do not know if the girl—if it is a girl—will understand me. And she is only one person, and Mother told me to find a town. I think that if I wait, she and the animals will go away. I am good at sitting still for hours, at hiding from the sight of those around me. I will wait.

The grass itches at my hands, but I do not move. The smell of the animals is strong and unpleasant, but I do not cough. The sun becomes brighter and brighter in the sky, and sweat drips into my eyes, and I barely blink. I am not here, I think. I think of nothing else.
)

but also I want to work on a novel so that WP has something to read that is my fanfiction. Top choices are Goblin Novel (probably he would like it best, but it needs serious serious work because I wrote it during first semester senior year which was INSANE and Pictash spends a lot of time in a library doing research) and 2010 NaNo That Went Nowhere (the two main characters don't have names, also they are basically a younger version of Nevalle and Tanithar) (her name is either Theresa or Tabitha, but Tabitha is too close to Tanithar and I don't like the way Theresa looks, though I like the sound of it) (anyway it's my Generic Fantasy Novel in the same way that the Goblin Novel is my Subversion of the Generic Fantasy Novel). SUGGESTIONS WELCOME.

okay okay time to go eat lunch and borrow Quark's shower and pay my rent and get a library card WOOT.

eta: MY UPSTAIRS NEIGHBOR IS WATCHING SLEEPING BEAUTY is it wrong to want to knock on their door and tell them how cool they are. (Actually I think they have small children, but still. This has made my early afternoon.)

1) AH I'M A WEEK BEHIND IN KORRA I need to fix that tomorrow morning before the next episode airs. SO, A WEEK BEHIND.

But shipping-wise I'm pretty neutral (I don't mind the apparent endgame ship but I'm not rabid about it) and so I'm able to just sit back and enjoy EVERYTHING, and EVERYTHING is so freaking awesome. Uh I haven't watched it in three weeks so I don't have anything specific in mind to talk about, but, you know! Korra! WATCH IT.

2) I finally read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, which led to a conversation between [livejournal.com profile] beth_shulman and myself that led to my realizing this:

So is it sad? Yes. Did it make me cry? Oh yes, though I mostly managed to keep it to sniffles. Did it occasionally frustrate me or seem a bit impossible? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. In the end, I really like his books--they deeply connect with me on an intellectual level, so while I'm not always emotionally invested as deeply as I might be, I'm definitely challenged and entertained. And this one slipped through and hit some emotional spots too.

If, uh. Any of that made sense. IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU INTERACT WITH JOHN GREEN? It was definitely better than Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I need to reread Paper Towns. I want him to write more kickass female characters. I think that bit above about me saying that I connect intellectually if not emotionally actually is an epiphany for me re: John Green's books. (Like, I didn't really like the main character of Paper Towns all that much, but I LOVE what [John] [Green] [what do I even call him] did with the deconstruction of the woman-on-a-pedestal trope.)

and Beth said I wouldn't say I have very specific taste, but I do tend to like books if they're strong in writing and in characterization, and to me, he isn't strong in characterization. So maybe that's why I keep reading him.

and I thought these were good points. Granted, it's been a very long time since I read a book for fun, and I'm just dipping my toes in the water here, but, yeah, those were my thoughts.

Also reading it I couldn't help thinking about [livejournal.com profile] philia_fan especially because Hazel has to drain her lungs and yeah.

3) So I just remembered that finishing TFIOS is why I started watching Big, which is in the process of airing, and despite the fact that it seems to be heading into student/teacher relationship land, she was really only his teacher for like two days, and ANYWAY the student is trapped in the body of Gong Yoo of Coffee Prince fame, and they are not only showcasing his marvelous acting skills but also his post-mandatory-military-service physique. So. You know.

Anyway it's adorable so far and I hope to keep watching it.

4) I STARTED VIRMIRE LAST NIGHT. Yes I am very slowly playing my way through Mass Effect 1. I am enjoying it immensely and I am afraid to see what they change between 1 an 2 but oh well.

Anyway I'm a femShep, although this is the first Bioware game where I have actually wanted to go through the trouble of trying to play a male character for the sake of romancing one of the het female characters. Most of them (Bastila, Dawn Star, Morrigan) I haven't wanted to romance (didn't like, didn't care about, found the female friendship to be so satisfying that a romance couldn't possibly complete), but omg I am in love with Ashley Williams I love her so much. I love her family and her belief system and her tactical analysis and she's a badass and I love her. She is my femShep's BESTFRIEND, although obviously they both understand rank and regulation and all that jazz.

And then there's Kaidan.

For those of you who are skipping this section anyway, here's a comparison of Ashley and Kaidan:
[SCENE: Inside a very fancy tower with lots of decorative water features and plants and impressive staircases leading up to the Galactic Council's meeting chamber.]
Ashley: THOSE STAIRCASES AREN'T JUST DECORATIVE, THEY'RE HIGHLY DEFENSIBLE. THIS WOULD BE A HARD PLACE TO LAUNCH AN ASSAULT ON.
Kaidan: I like the fountain. It's very soothing.

basically I am romancing him because he is SpaceCarth and his voice is so soothing and I love it. I tentatively know why femShep is interested in him (i.e. why it's not one-sided because it is obviously that he just thinks she hung the moon and would do anything she asked), but she's having serious issues with the whole rank regulation no-fraternizing thing. Which is also part of why he's opened up so much to her but she hasn't felt she can reciprocate; all she can do is be quietly attracted. Anyway, at the moment he doesn't seem as damaged as Alistair or even Carth was--I mean, yeah, sad backstory, but it was fifteen years ago--Alistair is young, and Carth's tragedy was fresh. (Other Bioware romances to compare to include Sky--who was just a wimpier version of Carth I thought--and Anders--who doesn't count because it felt less like romancing him and more like manipulating him just for the sake of controlling him did I mention what a horrible person Thistle Hawke really was.)

What else. I like the battle mechanics I think. I LOVE the space travel and I love the Mako the way everyone loves the Mako and I'm SO CLOSE to finishing all the survey quests (side note: Goose finished ALL THE SIDEQUESTS. She only looked at the internet for help ONCE. My sister, ladies and gentlemen, has beaten the game before me).

PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL ME FOR ANYTHING. ANYTHING. I LITERALLY AM JUST BLOWING UP GETH OUTSIDE THE VIRMIRE OUTPOST THINGIE. I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING YET.

5) You know this is my LJ and so I'm going to babble about twinfic for a moment. See, back when I was playing Dragon Age, I had an impossible headcanon character, because I enjoy coming up with that sort of thing, and anyway it was an AU thing where Elissa Cousland was a mage, and so at age five she got sent to the Circle, but since her father is, I dunno, the Teyrn of Highever, her family did come to visit her occasionally and she was allowed to be in contact with them, the idea being that once she passed her Harrowing she would become Mage in Residence at Highever under the watchful eye of several templars, etc. etc. etc. AS IF THIS WAS NOT AU-Y ENOUGH Elissa also had a twin brother named Aidan who grows up normally at Highever. When the Blight started, Elissa got recruited into the Grey Wardens and Aidan escaped Highever by the skin of his teeth, went to Redcliffe, and proceeded to get roaringly drunk and occasionally help fight zombies. Shenanigans ensue in which each sibling thinks the other one is dead, eventually Aidan gets found and recruited to help join the team, Elissa falls for Alistair much to everyone's chagrin, etc. etc. etc.

The point of all that is that I have a history of this sort of thinking, so the fact that while I was figuring out my femShep's name I realized she has a twin sister should not be surprising. The difference here is that I never actually did an Elissa/Aidan playthrough, whereas Emma Jane Shepard totally has a twin sister named Catherine Elizabeth. (Their dad was deployed and their mom named them after Jane Austen heroines.) Both girls are biotics (Emma's a Vanguard), and they both enlisted (or whatever it is you have to do in order to become an officer in the Alliance) and went through training together and all that jazz, and then Emma went off to become a Marine and Catie went into Naval Intelligence, and while Emma went off and became a galactic star, Catie got buried so deep in Intelligence that they ended up wiping her from all official records. Basically, they've got a perfect Shepard analogue that they can send off if they want to and no one would know it's a twin and not the original because even those who know that two of them exist can't tell the difference.

And of course Emma is the ~*~serious~*~ one and Catie is an expert mimic/the outgoing popular one and yes they're almost thirty but WHO CARES, I JUST WANT TO WRITE MISTAKEN IDENTITY FIC ALL OVER EVERYTHING.

NOT EVEN BOTHERING TO CUT, OFF TO SAVE THE GALAXY.

[livejournal.com profile] crisium_rising gave me a meme! So, since Quark is sleeping in her room and thus cutting me off from my DA2 fix (and my screenshots, thus making it difficult for me to show you the hot mess that is Thistle Hawke), I am going to do it!

(Also I should talk about DA2. I kind of love it. On the other hand, I have two full pages of notes about Thistle, because I cannot nail down her character. Sarcastic with the people she likes! Aggressive with everyone else! Supremely confident in her magic! Cocky! Rich! Beautiful! Might be falling in love with Anders, definitely wants to rip Isabela's pants off*! But what is the underlying motivation? *weeps*)

(*Note: Isabela does not actually wear pants.)

Anyway, the meme.

1. Reply to this post with "UNICORNS", and I will pick five of your icons.

2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.

3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.

4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee

This is an updated version of one of the first icons [livejournal.com profile] loquaciousquark ever made! From the School Time Shipping (STS)(so close to STDS) (thanks Mike and Bryan) episode, where Katara says smell ya later to Jet and Haru and Zuko and goes off with...the Blue Spirit. Who is actually Zuko. But Zuko's busy going AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH and I just love his expression and the way his jaw is just hitting the ground with sheer DO NOT WANT.

Spoilers follow, but nothing that would ruin the books. Mostly it is cut because MY SHIPS, I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT THEM. FEELINGS.
ARTEMIS/HOLLY OTP )

er, anyway, that's my Artemis Fowl icon. /cough

I have a lot of Issues with Enchanted, but omg Amy Adams is adorable, and also this icon basically encapsulates my reaction to a lot of things. In a step-by-step sort of way. SQUEE.

EVERYONE ALWAYS ASKS ABOUT THIS ICON oh man I haven't used it in ages but okay okay so anything [livejournal.com profile] aspectabund does involving the Queen's Thief books is just about guaranteed to make me a) laugh b) cry c) explode and this post is no different. I...can't really explain if you haven't read the books. But. There you go. Gen's having a bad day.

THIS IS THE ONLY ICON I HAVE EVER MADE and I made it because I desperately needed a Dragon Age icon. This is the expression Morrigan makes when you tell her that she is going to get to fight Loghain at the Landsmeet. She does a dance. It is so sarcastic and oh joy and I laughed so hard the first time I did it. And Morrigan is, I believe, my absolute favorite character from DAO. I could write about her ALL THE TIME. She's just so complex and vulnerable and tough and her friendship storyline with f!Warden is so AWESOME and EPIC and satisfying that when she leaves at the end you're actually sad...

...unless you're my boyfriend, who was all "I hate Morrigan" and "Alistair sucks."* On the other hand, he apparently just took his character into the Deep Roads by himself. Just for the sake of being a dwarf, walking around the Deep Roads. I. Don't always understand him.

*well if you would not leave him in the armor he was wearing at the start of the game...

anyway as far as RL goes WP and I are still the best thing since indoor plumbing (what? I rank that above sliced bread any day) and Quark and I have seen each others' optic nerves so we are ~*~closer than ever~*~ and she really needs to get her butt out of bed so I can PLAY THE GAME ALREADY. UGH.

Okay y'all for those of you who are interested I swear I am working on a post about last week. Really. It's coming. I just--have to work out how to word things. And try to determine how much kissing to talk about. (I love kissing. It is AWESOME. And now I miss it muchly.) (Here: tell me what y'all want to hear about, that will help.)

In the meantime, two things! One is a meme from [livejournal.com profile] redbrunja from a couple weeks back, in which I am supposed to post about five things and if you comment with a bang bang or something I'll ask you about five things and anyway, her five things for me were

right here! )

The second thing: I remember this song, how many years after I first saw it? And I found it on Youtube today and felt a desire to share it with everyone:

I always saw myself as Francine )
jade_sabre: (s&s: elinor writing)
if I get through tomorrow I will be HALFWAY THERE maybe I will make a better post then.

I want to talk about something fandom-y! I am like three chapters away from finishing The Farthest Shore and the chapter I ended on today ended with Series Main Character mentioning wanting to see Book Two Main Character and I squealed like a little girl in the (empty) teacher's lounge because I love them that much. SO MUCH. (People on the plane with me while I was reading Book Two: I am still really sorry about that.)

Glee doesn't come back until next week! To keep watching to see if Puckleberry makes a comeback y/n.

My DA big bang fic is stalled at 1600 words, about 600 of which are going to have to change because as Jak pointed out clearly this moment comes after Darin offers Gorim to Masha and he gets really pissed off, so I have to come up with another way for her to convince him to let her meet Masha in the first place without her ordering him to do it. Maybe if it is early enough in their relationship she just bullies him into it? As they get to know each other better he becomes more resolute (and, I think, she understands his convictions better).

My main problem really seems to be that I have two story lines and I need to plot them out separate and then figure out where they link up, because we have flashbacks and then we have the present, and I can't decide if the present will be in present tense or not. Also the flashback really has two storylines of its own, but I think the whole fic is from Gorim's POV (what, me writing about the stalwart bodyguard type? Never...), which will present challenges of its own. Basically we have the ascension of a queen against the backdrop of the developments of a badass friendship and a deeply suppressed romance; what pieces of the backdrop do we need, and when?

WELL that was helpful.

My choir is doing more Handel! I love Handel.

I watched Ever After last week. Danielle and the prince kiss very sweetly. Also, that movie reminds me of my 2008 NaNo, and not just because of the Cinderella stuff--France (specifically, I think, the Loire region) permeates both of them, and watching the movie/rereading the manuscript (oh God it needs so much help) (well not really plot-wise, but individual sentences need so much attention) (never mind that I still haven't written part two because--and okay, maybe here the plot does need help--the whole thing is about Nell's development from where she starts to where it ends? [This sounds like a duh statement.] But I'm not sure how to carry that thread from the first part [a fairy-tale retelling, less obviously about Nell] to the second part [which is about marriage and therefore not really your normal YA fare at all] [maybe I should just change the whole novel from being YA] [but she's so young in the beginning!] [well, so was David Copperfield] [you begin to see my problems, I think] [OH I should reread Spindle's End and see how Robin McKinley does it] [I will reread Earthsea when I want to write Ariadne] [MC, what's that fellowship with the whole year-in-Rome thing?] [I forget what I was originally talking about])...oh, I see. Watching the movie/reading the manuscript makes me miss France like WHOA.

but then I am missing lots of things.

moving on.

Oh look! I have made it to shower time, and even worked a few things out along the way. Success!

I kind of love it in a shipper way! When you see this, post an excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

Since [livejournal.com profile] spellcoats was nice enough to tell you things about her WIPs, I suppose I will at least tell you fandom, unlike last time, when I just let you guess.

Also, these excerpts are longish. Oops.

(p.s. I have 24 files open right now. Some of them are also the same as last time. Oops.)

(p.p.s. I have spent at least half an hour on this, when I could have been...WRITING.)

Goose Girl is probably my favorite Shannon Hale so far. As I said in a comment somewhere else, though, I feel like part of my problem with her books might be that they are so very similar to what and how I write, I can't quite fall into them. It's not even that I'm busy dissecting them; it's like wearing a pair of jeans that just doesn't quite fit.

I read the Snow White and the Cinderella installments in the Once Upon a Time series (see: WHY DON'T I KNOW ABOUT THESE THINGS IN ADVANCE? WHY DON'T THEY EVER HIRE ME?), and they were both surprisingly good. Not as well-written as Shannon Hale, but both very creative; though short, and therefore not as in-depth as they could have been, they still struck chords of complexity in their characters.

I have received all sorts of awesome presents and cards and postcards in the mail! Just so people who sent them know.

Anyway, the whole reason I hit post was because TONIGHT'S GLEE, WAS AMAZING. AMAZING. Like, I literally have two complaints (which, considering that I couldn't even watch an entire subplot of last week's episode, is very small), and they are

1) why so overproduced, every song ever
and
2) WHY CAN'T PUCK SING IN HIS ACTUAL RANGE, WHY ARE WE PRETENDING HE IS A TENOR, oh God Puck please sing/talk all the time, I don't even care.

that is it. The right characters said the right things, and like it was smartly and respectfully done, and it was just--I don't even like "What if God was One of Us" but they redeemed it with Tina!solo and general awesome (also: Mike Chang grinning at Tina while she sang, I SHIP THEM TOGETHER SO HARD, THEY ARE THE CUTEST, also he is getting so much more screentime homgyay).

Anyway. Flist, discuss.
jade_sabre: (sweeney todd: blood-spattered Johanna)
1) I read Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex, and I don't have nearly as much to say about it as I did about The Time Paradox. This is not to say I didn't enjoy it; I laughed at least once a page, because Colfer was playing fast and loose with hilarious dialogue and hilarious side characters and even point of view--often he would describe something with a particularly nice turn of phrase, and in the next line have the current POV character think something along the lines of if I'm saying things like that, I must be suffering from oxygen deprivation. The writing and the plot were much, much tighter than TP, like you could really feel his growth as a writer and the editor's steady hand working upon the novel.

That being said, it was almost too short; it felt, like A Conspiracy of Kings, as if we were being handed an incident full of important information that would unfold in the denouement, packaged within an entertaining adventure, letting us spend time with all of our favorite characters but really just setting the pieces for some grander showdown in the future. (Hint: All the even-numbered books in the series have involved Opal Koboi, and the next, allegedly final, book is going to be number 8, if you can imagine it.) I loved seeing Holly and JULIET yay Juliet and Butler and Mulch and Foaly (out of his element!) and Artemis again, and they were all wonderful, and at the end of the book I wanted--more. There were so many little things that still needed exploring--not that the book doesn't tie together, but rather that things are changing and we're stopped before everything really starts rushing to a head.

I do take issue with the fact that Artemis is allegedly celebrating his fifteenth birthday at the beginning of the story, because he was fifteen back in The Lost Colony. Of course, my dad pointed out to me that the target audience of this series is probably still 12-14-year-old boys, despite the fact that the series is ten years old and those of us who were twelve when we started reading are now twenty-two and still shipping Holly/Artemis like burning. And the series has grown up, too, though perhaps not as noticeably as say Harry Potter; the central themes in The Time Paradox were certainly older, perhaps in some ways too old for a fourteen-year-old to grasp; it's one thing to read about a character reflecting on personal change and growth and the choices you make to get there, and quite another to really have a grasp on how that's happened in your life. And the humor has gotten a bit more complex too (see: I-see-what-you-did-with-that-POV), even if Mulch is still around for the fart jokes.

Anyway, it was a fantastic little yarn, but mostly I am just impatient for the next one.

SPOILERS )

2) I rewatched Music and Lyrics the other night, the cute little rom-com with Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant that Malone and I started watching at home one night, got about thirty seconds into the music video, and stopped and waited until Mom was around to watch it with us. The whole theme of creation and music isn't as deep as the theme of creation and writing is in Stranger Than Fiction--this is a rom -com, after all--but what impressed me this time around was Hugh Grant's acting job. He is very...adult, in this film--he knows where he is in his life and he's comfortable with who he is and what he's doing, and I especially liked that he is a musician, and he shows it--in quiet little ways, like the way he sits down at the piano in his apartment or in the store, like it's something he's infinitely familiar with. And even though he's "just" a pop music star, he writes his own stuff--he knows how music works, knows how to put it together, and it's all just...there. I just...really liked his character, and thought he did an understatedly phenomenal job of playing it.

3) I started rewatching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night but stopped right before the final battle because I was pretty sure I wouldn't make it through without sobbing and because I needed to go to bed (woe, the adult schedule).

musing on the movie )

4) I have started reading The Demon's Lexicon because the library had it (and the sequel), but I am apparently Not In the Mood. Partially because I am reading a book called The Wall of Fame and it contains some truly atrocious metaphors that ought to be taken behind the publishing house and shot repeatedly, and partially because I have trouble getting into "tough" characters like Nick, and mostly because reading about Nick and Alan makes me think about Felix and Mildmay and, well, Felix and Mildmay are a really, REALLY hard fictional brotherly relationship to beat. Like, nigh-impossible. Especially after Corambis and their exchange of brotherly affection. (FELIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIX MILDMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY I JUST WANT YOU BOTH TO BE HAPPY FOREVER AND I FEEL LIKE IT IS OBTAINABLE AND THIS JUST OVERWHELMS ME WITH RELIEF, I LOVE YOU BOTH SO HARD.)

(yes, Jade just said she loved Felix. It--sometimes these things happen.)

gems from aforementioned Atrocious Metaphor Book )

5) To end on a positive note: I made myself dinner and ate it and now am full of food! My fish is still alive! (His name is Ron, for those interested. My first dog was named Fred, and then one of my sisters got a gerbil and named it George, and our first betta fish was named Percy, and I think another gerbil was named Charlie, so...he is red and beautiful and I will post pictures.) My apartment is an utter mess! Ingrid Michaelson writes beautiful songs! Quark drew the picture that was in my head because she is awesome! [livejournal.com profile] crisium_rising writes THE MOST AMAZING Dragon Age fanfic ever! The libraries here have BOTH Virtu and Mirador (I literally gasped when I turned the corner and saw them both in their hardbacked glory on their shelf) AND they have lots of [livejournal.com profile] sartorias's novels (I brought home A Posse of Princesses and am.very excited about reading it! My books fit on the bookshelf! My apartment door locks! There are trees and mountains around!

Life is good. :-)

so I've played through the Landsmeet, now, and I won't get to play again until next Monday probably, so now I will put on some reflective music (post about that later?) and reflect!

alert! lots and lots of meta follows. Also, my perspective on some of the following stuff might change once I beat the game; we'll see what happens.

SO BASICALLY, IN SUMMARY: I love this game, a lot, because it gives me so many options and so many things to think about and doodle with in my brain (and Zevran! I...think I love him more than Alistair. My feelings towards Alistair are complicated these days, as you um. Might have noticed), and because it's really, really good at sucking you in and making you feel a part of what's going on, and I should probably just hurry up and join the fandom and post these thoughts, which have probably been said before, in one of their comms, shouldn't I. OH WELL. I HAVE COUSINS TO BABYSIT AND AN ARCHDEMON TO DEFEAT AND FIC TO BETA. Time to go to bed.

but I just finished rewatching most of Book One: Water (we skipped "The Great Divide" and "The Northern Air Temple" on purpose, and idk what happened to "The Fortuneteller" but it somehow became a casualty of our fast-forward button), and I just thought I would share a few things.

(Also Quark linked me to a massive Bleach meta post and I felt like meta-ing.)

(disclaimer: Quark I do not know if you will like this meta.)

how I came to love ATLA, and Zutara, and fandom )

or, alternate title, Still Not the Graduation Post

anyway I have read some books since coming home! None of them are the books I meant to read. Some of them I read years and years ago (heading into that scary "ten years ago" category that is starting to take over my life), some of them were new to me! One was even a translation of a French YA fantasy novel. They were all weirdly similar, as you will see by the cut tags.

I have discovered that I have trouble picking books off the shelves in the library unless I know the author or have heard good things about the author. This multiplies times a thousand bazillion when I leave the YA section and head for the adult fiction section. (Also, the adult fiction section seems to have more disguised-cover romance novels than previously expected.) I hit the jackpot yesterday--the little itty bitty library near my house had both How to Ditch Your Fairy and Liar, which I have been looking for FOREVER. Now, if only one of the branches would get in some of Maureen Johnson's books...

Anyway, Books I Have Read This Summer, Possible Spoilers Ahead, I Will Try to Warn You

Zel: Girl gets locked in tower )

The Book of a Thousand Days: Princess and maidservant get locked in tower, people die )

Quest for a Maid: Girl has manservant, princess and girl-turned-attendant spend lots of time in boats, people die )

The Princetta: Princess and maidservant runs away, spends lots of time in a boat, people die )

The Shining Company: Boy has manservant, boy becomes shieldbearer, more people die than in both previous books combined )

I did take a detour, as part of my I Will Get My History From Biographies quest, and read
Notorious: Sometimes it is hard to be impartial when talking about Ingrid Bergman who makes everybody gaga )

I also got about forty pages into
The Ruins of Gorlan: Somewhere in my high school notebooks there is a generic apprentice YA fantasy that I really ought to bring back to life )

phew that took a long time.

on my to-read list are the aforementioned Justine Larbalestier books, Lavinia by Ursula K. LeGuin (overall I am wary of the books my mom checks out, novelizations famous women in history/literature, because they usually turn out to be giant sexfests, but I trust LeGuin--see, cannot pick a book up off a shelf anymore), and Lauren Bacall and Steve Martin's autobiographies (see: Biographies Quest). Oh and I picked up Allegiance because it was made of love and I felt like reading a SW book I knew ended well. Oh and I should read The Great Gatsby. And Jane Eyre. And maybe work on my own novel.

You know, life as usual.

So I haven't posted in a while, and I've been meaning to. You'll notice I'm still avoiding making a graduation post. One day I will feel secure enough that that is Behind Me and that I am going on to Something Else, but right now the future is still pretty blank-slate-y and I am loathe to let go. So instead, a book/movie/TV post, mostly spoiler-free (spoilers will be noted). Maybe in that order. Maybe not.

Actually let's get the television part over so that people who don't care can skip it.

Oh God, this post is going to be much longer than I meant. Maybe I will do a book one after

Glee, God help me )

Alice, the channel-that-shall-not-be-named-but-did-an-awesome-job-with-this-version )

other shows, linked by people's fondness for showing marathons on TV )

OKAY MOVIES. I WILL DO TWO OF THEM.
Iron Man, Iron Man, Does Whatever Iron Man Can )

Soapdish, a movie which is not at all recent but who cares I don't I need mroe of it in my life )

okay, books are going to have to wait, but not too long. I think I only have like three days to read The Curse of Chalion, so we'll see how that goes.

so what about everyone else? also, though I can't really talk, where did my flist go? Y'all can't be doing things. I'm certainly not.
jade_sabre: (robot unicorn attack)
sadly not by me, but still awesome.

I think I am avoiding posting about how my days have been going because, um, if I did I would have to start thinking about how I'm graduating, and then I would cry all over my laptop. So instead we are all being WEIRDLY MOODY and getting UPSET ABOUT RANDOM THINGS like HOW FLIPPING CASTLE/BECKETT IS BEATING PUCK/RACHEL HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY CHEMISTRY

as we were saying, Castle basically relies on the success of other shows (e.g. Bones and The Mentalist), which doesn't make it bad, but doesn't make it compelling to those who are fans of the other shows (especially if the other shows actually have chemistry, see Bones). Anyway vote for Zutara, etc. etc., show Usagi/Mamoru (Sailor Moon/Tuxedo Mask) some love because they are hurting. I think so far those are the only ones I'm really worried about (not that there aren't other ships in there that I love, but so far everyone is doing okay.)

(Having to pick between Mulan/Shang and Tiana/Naveen based on hotness is pretty cruel though. Both couples are pretty smoking.)

Anyway! On the subject of Puck/Rachel, which is my Glee OTP (although I am really fond of this Jesse/Rachel thing that's going on because Rachel just looks so happy. Also I am really fond of the last two episodes of Glee because, aside from Will, it's actually been...watchable). Ariel has been sending me links to fic as rewards for finishing my homework (one paper left!), and with a link to this one (haven't read yet, have to hang up Disney pictures first...and then probably, like, color more...), she sent me the following meta:

[note: this was clearly written while under the influence of lots of Puck's POV fic. Just sayin'.]

cut for hilarious amounts of Puckspeak )

SO, fellow watchers-of-Glee/sellouts-like-me, thoughts? Anyone else notice these trends in Puck fic? Anyone more familiar with the first nine episodes than I am want to let me know what we see of Puck's character? PLEASE, DISCUSS.

1) So, in the song "Bad Romance," which I love a lot and which you should listen to, she repeats the line "I don't wanna be friends" multiple times.

Having listened to the song, do you think this line refers to
a) the fact that she wanted a solely sexual relationship
or
b) the fact that they are friends but she wants to be more?

I am doing an informal poll, and your input is welcome.

2) I wrote my Nietzsche paper in an hour (literally) and then lo and behold my knee started going all crazy on me and my good knee started tickling and so I ended up emailing the paper in and sitting on my futon with an ice pack, WOE.

3) I have grown very attached to this cover of Coldplay's "The Scientist," in a "I listen to this over and over again and want to write."

4) Speaking of writing, this is me NOT starting my post-season-3 Katara fic that I spent three hours plotting the other night with [livejournal.com profile] nessismore. (Y'all, I hit all the plot points. I even, like, made decisions, where normally I just keep changing it over and over in my head--I had to pick and go.) I really ought to go ahead and get the prologue down before I forget it.

5) I haven't talked about my life in forever, but I haven't really had any crazy adventures or done anything particularly fun lately. I mean, I've had fun, but I've also had a lot of long conversations that amount to "I am screwed once I leave this institution," and that's just not much fun to talk about.

6) A Room with a View is up on YouTube in its entirety, JUST SAYING, if you want to celebrate mah birfday the way I will be celebrating it. (Singing along to "O Mio Babbino Caro" is optional but encouraged. Bonus points if you can do a crazy operatic soprano not-glissando between those two syllables of "bello.")

7) Sophos's face is up, and it is appropriately pretty.

8) Idk, is there anything y'all want to hear about from me?

9) I took Pictash into the creative writing club and they liked him! (He is the singer in this post.)

10) As for that icon meme everyone's been doing, here's my answers from September. (Not!surprise: my answers are mostly the same.)

Okay, I think I covered all the main points I wanted to, and everything else can be remembered in the comments. Overall, I really, really loved it, and it's still really, really good, and the ways in which it is lacking are bolstered, at least for fans I think, by the characters.

Remind me to tell y'all my adventures in finding my copy. AND REMEMBER, FEEL FREE TO SQUEE AWAY.
