--this is not capslock for the leading up bit: a few days ago someone on Sounis linked to a contest for signed books and in the comments they wanted you to name your favorite literary thief and I was like, "man, how many literary thieves can I even think of at one time, especially when Gen is stuck in my head and won't go away," so I wrote down Eugenides and George from Song of the Lioness, BUT AS OF THIS LAST PLANE RIDE, WE CAN TOTALLY ADD GED TO THAT LIST, BECAUSE HE IS SMOKIN

I mean because he is a kickass awesome hilarious sexily confident and mature and willing to accept help and head over heels for *coughcough* and oh man the people on my plane must have hated me SO MUCH as I giggled my way through The Tombs of Atuan but it was SO GOOD but I had to take a break before reading The Farthest Shore I think I will do that on the plane ride back.

but shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii The Tombs of Atuan I think if I can one day achieve the kind of writing that is a blend of LeGuin, Whalen Turner, and McKinley, my life will be complete.

TRON TIEMZ? I THINK SO.

EARTHSEA!!! HECK YES!! I LOVE IT SO SO SO SO MUCH!

The Farthest Shore is excellent. I also love Tehanu. And that's as much Earthsea as I've read, but I love Ged to itty bitty pieces. And Tenar as well.

Also: WELCOME BACK TO THE GUMP! :D :D :D

FUCK YES NOW BUY ASSASSIN'S CREED.

Speaking of Sounis, what the heck is up with the flood of completely off-topic, unrelated posts lately? Every time I check my flist I want to flip things.

WELL between Checkers working all the time and Ro being super-busy at Oxford, I offered to step in and, you know, help. Except sometimes I forget and then I don't actually bother to read every post, and then I remember, duh, that is your job. :-/

I have never read any LeGuin :( I think the awfulness of the covers at my library is turning me off... want to give me encouragement?

Also, what laptop did you buy? I think I'm ready to buy a new one (mine's four years old, and is starting to slow down, and I'm looking to upgrade... even though at the back of my head I'm still wondering if I really need to) so I'd love to hear what you have and why you like it/bought that specific model!

Also, yay for home! Also also, I just read Blackout by Connie Willis and now she's 2 for 2 and I have another author to fangirl over and I cannot wait until the people before me return All Clear so that I can check it out. Blackout was so good. There is so much about World War II that I don't know. I said as much to my parents and they were all, oh, you didn't know that? Smart people, sometimes, can be a little annoying. Anyway, if you haven't read Blackout, you must. It isn't YA, so it fits into your non-YA thing, it's time travel, World War II, and all sorts of awesome.

If you don't mind, I'll just throw my two cents in and say I highly recommend LeGuin. Like MWT, she doesn't necessarily follow all the Tolkienesque fantasy conventions. I would compare LeGuin to Tolkien in a sense because her world building is so very rich, but Earthsea, instead of taking place on one continent with the good guys in the west and the bad guys in the east, it has a big archipelago. And the main characters and the "hero" aren't white, either, and I think LeGuin was one of the first major fantasy/sci fi authors to do that.

And there is so much more that I love about Earthsea, but honestly it's been a while since I read the series, so I can't come up with much off the top of my head. Great world. Fantastic characters. Awesome storytelling, and just really good writing to boot. Definitely check them out, despite the ugly covers. XP

HOLY CRAP YES. YES I ENCOURAGE YOU RIGHT NOW.

God I don't even know where to start. LeGuin has a very mythic style of writing that is straightforward yet subtle and absolutely gorgeous, and she writes about Important Things About Which One Ought To Think, within the context of her mythos, and it's kind of Susan-Cooper-y I suppose would be the closest I could think of, except not exactly, and there are Names and hardships and pride coming before a fall, and I see Audrey has also commented by now because I'm super-slow, but just--at the same time it's completely fulfilling and leaves you yearning for more, MORE, PLEASE GIVE ME MORE. (Luckily I still have at least two books to read! Yay!)

WELL actually my dad won this one and it's an HP (my old one is a Dell and over the course of six years I've only had to replace the hard drive once, and that was...two months ago?) and I'm not 100% happy with it, but it's better than my old one (although I would love to use my old one in a netbook-y way, but we're giving it to my grandmother). The best advice I can give you about buying laptops is to talk to someone who knows computers, order directly from the site, and customize to your heart's delight. Don't buy one off the shelf. They tend to suck more.

/might have more comments later?

OKAY. I WILL PUT HER ON MY LIST. :-D

Susan Cooper? That's a great recommendation... And your description makes me want to read them :)

Yep, I'm planning on customizing a Dell right now, I think. As soon as I can afford it.

(Also, I registered for next semester, and I couldn't take Supreme Court and the Constitution because it conflicted with my web design class. Which I need for my major, and if I don't take it, it will set me back a year. But still *sob*)

I bought the books because of the covers - the paperback editions from lo these many years ago:

I love the convoluted intricacy of the artwork.

Those are actually really nice. I love old, hand-drawn covers.

The ones in my library are ugly and they feel cheap, so it's a bit off-putting.

How did you like the books themselves, though? (I was supposed to read at least one this weekend, but I also had Doomsday Book out, so that didn't really happen.)

You have to read Tehanu too! Tenar is probably my favourite character.

Also I share your love of George. He's just so so awesome.

I loved The Tombs of Atuan!! I kind of slouched my way through A Wizard of Earthsea, but I might have to read it again--it seems like I couldn't have enjoyed the second one so much if the first was as bad as I remember. XD

Plus I adored making Eugenides/Attolia parallels.

Have fun at Tron! *has so many movies she needs to go see but has no time for*

Oh Earthsea, Yay! They are excellent. Like beth says, the books are a hard sell because of the dated covers but if I can get a kid to read the first one, they love them. So glad you are at home.

YES, EXACTLY. I read the first one ages and ages and ages ago and really, really liked it, but five years later I didn't even remember that it had been Wizard of Earthsea. MY MISTAKE, WILL REMEMBER BETTER NEXT TIME.

Have you read the Riddle-Master trilogy by McKillip? I really liked it, too, and feel like it's underrated.
