I'm not even sure how I feel about this at this point, but

Patrick Swayze passed away today.

...oh and RPattz and KStew are engaged making out in front of large groups of people? That actually almost cheers me up.

Also there is a fire and God only knows what else going on outside the window.

[insert profanity about Plato here]

edit: WHAT THE HELL FEDERER. HOW COULD YOU LOSE.

son of adam edit: THIS THREAD CONTAINS SO MUCH WIN no matter what Quark says.

Honey, you didn't grow up with Mr. Swayze like I did. I've swam in his essence at Lake Lure (the place where they filmed all the lake scenes), danced across the same dock Baby did...le sigh.

Off to watch To Wong Foo to make myself feel better.

This summer I kept thinking about the log scene when I was trying to cross a river with a 30-pound backpack on. (Confession: I saw that movie six times in the movie theater, and my father went with me at least twice!)

WTF? It took me half an hour and 3 alarm clocks to get out of bed and I click on this.

I should have stayed in bed.

...is it bad that my first instinct is to apologize with, "i am truly sorry for your lots"?

Yes. It is bad. Very bad.

In better news, I managed to get through the "This is the library. The books are there. This is the library catalog. It doesn't have spelling suggestions like Google. This is JSTOR. Know it. Love it. See this information? That goes in your bibliography. And BTW Google Books can be useful." presentation without falling asleep in front of a bunch of first years.

LOLOLOLOL I am sitting in that speech RIGHT NOW.

lo it has not changed since last year. or the year before that. the only difference from high school is that AVL is no longer a resource. ...but all the resources it contained are still available.

and so far we haven't even mentioned JSTOR. *facepalm*

They just started doing it here for the English first years. This is stuff I easily figured out all by myself because the PLNU library collection was really only useful for Theology books written before 1950, which wasn't very useful for a Lit degree. JSTOR was on the general lesson plan and worksheet the students had to do. I was cheeky and also quickly showed LION.chadwyck.co.uk, because it's an effing invaluable resource to me, so they should know it too.

AVL?

I've been here for this talk like three times--Intro to Lit Crit, probably 19th Century (when I actually learned how to do this stuff), and now this class--and so far, 2/3s of the time the professor has been more knowledgable than the librarian. SORRY CHECKERS, I KNOW YOU ARE AWESOME.

...omg findtext. nowai. mla bibliography. no way.

OMG LION. I LOVE LION. :-D :-D

Alabama Virtual Library. Not sure if it still exists, but it basically involved Alabama's gov't paying for us to be able to access Gale and EBSCOhost, etc. etc.

I figure librarians know databases in general and all the general stuff for lots of disciplines, while the professors know exactly how to finesse the things they use all the time.

RIP Patrick Swayze. I saw him playing Billy Flynn in Chicago. Such a graceful man.
