My friend linked me to it and I literally just sat there until I realized I should probably give a reaction...so I had my roommate reach over and type it for me, because I was still staring at my screen in shock.
it's amazing how i haven't even read calvin and hobbes in years and yet i see this one tiny thing and MY WORLD FALLS APART, god. my heart, how it breaks.
I literally just sat here while Lovie typed the things I said very slowly because my hands refused to move because I was too busy slowly falling apart.
Okay you know the original comic Calvin and Hobbes? Well, if you don't, it's a newspaper comic that ran for something like ten years, chronicling the adventures of a troublemaking six-year-old named Calvin and his tiger, Hobbes. It was, and I am not exaggerating, one of the best comics ever written. It had so much heart and imagination and the art was so wonderful and Calvin was such a brat and Hobbes was so wise and UGH. I mean, I own multiple copies of the book collections because my brother and I destroyed the originals from frequent rereads.
Now, this image--not painted by the original artist, Bill Watterson--features Calvin in his trademark red striped shirt and black pants in the background as an adult, while Hobbes goes off with what's presumably Calvin's future daughter.
GUH I CAN'T EVEN LOOK AT IT but it's like, Calvin, the perennial six-year-old, has actually grown up and become an adult and PROCREATED, and Hobbes is looking back almost confusedly because he hasn't changed at all, but there's this new six-year-old GIRL, and Calvin's looking on all just-a-little-sadly and
It's been ages and ages since I've read Calvin and Hobbes, I think I have the entire collection printed in papers in the larger (and aptly-named) treasuries. I remember mourning when the author discontinued writing them.
Then again, I think that it's a lesson in and of itself; principles are sometimes better than money. Compromise is a lesson, but sometimes? Don't compromise. And, then, there's all the lessons and thoughts in there as well.
