I have now seen it! so you can discuss it with me. or with each other. Whatever.

also this week I reread Allegiance and it made me so happy inside that now I am rereading the original Thrawn Trilogy. And, unlike the novelization of Empire Strikes Back, the prose has held up to its sturdy, quick and entertaining memories, while even containing a downright good line or two. (Stylistically. Character-wise, I hear the actors' voices in my head and just start squeeing while reading.) This may or may not be connected to the Star Wars exhibit that rolled into town (pictures maybe forthcoming? There are not many good ones, which was a point of contention for the night, also Daddy kept taking pictures of things instead of me looking at things, which was clearly more interesting), and YOU GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUYS I RODE IN THE MILLENIUM FALCON IT WAS AAAAWESOOOOOOOOOOOOME and things like ZOMG ALEC GUINNESS SAT THERE and

oh right I remember what I was going to say here, once I started off with that little Tim Zaaaaaaaaaaaahn I love you and Mike Stackpoole so muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch thing

so once upon a time [livejournal.com profile] lily_handmaiden wrote this post talking about how she loves Star Wars, including the prequels? And, like, I mean, don't get me wrong, the prequels aren't too good, and even ROTJ has some seriously lacking moments, and sure I have my own little what-could-have-been canon in my head with the prequels (which has lots of room for Obi-Wan/Padme, mostly because I wasn't remotely interested by Anakin at all) (ugh passive sentence) (anyway), and sure I think Darths and Droids has many more coherent explanations for the plot, and sure George Lucas has made some seriously bad decisions, but you know what?

at the end of the day, I don't care. I will never not have that feeling, when I sit down to watch the movie, that this is a whole UNIVERSE I would love to be a part of in any way. I will always giggle to myself when references are made to it, I will probably always get excited when we see Alderaan at the end of ROTS (IT'S ALDERAAN! LOOK! LOOK! IT'S NOT ALL BLOWN UP!) and somewhere in my mind Luke and Leia's long-lost little sister still lives, sneakin' around the Millennium Falcon just beyond the camera's sight.

I love Star Wars, I love the prequels too, I love the space ships, I love the whole EU, I love the galaxy, and all its silly quirks,

Willow! I just cannot stop grinning when I read it! It's like, Luke Leia Han! Chewie! (Side note: can the Wookie actually say his own name? Like, really, is that just name someone came up with? 'cause I've heard a lot of Wookie growls and I've never heard anything that sounds remotely like "Chewbacca." All the other Wookies get growly names. I'm a little concerned.) TALON KARRDE! (I remember studying Romanticism in, like, tenth grade, and seeing the phrase "Sturm und Drang" and going wait, wait, I know I've--OH TALON KARRDE, ILU.) MARA. Mara Mara Mara.

you have got to go find Allegiance. It is just such a fun little book.

ALSO there were switches and everything (http://www.spacecamp.com/landing/starwars/falcon.php). No dice, though. Also it was like two in the morning when we got on. It was rockin'.

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah boom de yada.

SHADA! Man I have that "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" book and I used to be able to identify like every character in the movie from those stories. Shada's the only one who still sticks with me. (The Hand of Thrawn duology is next on my reading list. Oh and I might try to read Liar. I didn't much like How to Ditch Your Fairy, though, so we'll see.)

I totally forgot she was in the Cantina! Yeah, I used to have that one, "Tales from the Empire," "Tales from Jabba's Palace," and "Tales of the Bounty Hunters."

I have the scene where the Idiot's Array blows up, and Karrde thinks she's dead and then finds out she's not, saved on my hard drive.

WHAT'S THE MATTER BOSS? ARE--ARE THOSE TEARS?

NO NO JUST--JUST DUST IN THE AIR DUCTS. YEAH. DUST.

(though I can't really hear Shada saying "boss" but oh well. It's better than putting Mara in a sparkly silver jumpsuit, Kevin J. Anderson.)

I started it! And was going man, Aaron Allston, you have improved from these beginning days so much, and also man, I wish he had picked a different POV, like that one chick that Kman thinks he's all in love with but is not because it would be really cool to have it from her POV (tell me not to pull a Mike Stackpoole and, uh, write that novel), but I was enjoying it, and then it ended up packed in a box and now I do not know where it is. Once I actually open my boxes (mostly so I can pack them up again), I will finish it. Actually I might just go get it from the library. I feel a general Good Star Wars Books reread coming due, and the X-Wing books are next chronologically.

(d'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaw in Dark Force Rising Mara's started having the YOU WILL KILL LUKE SKYWALKER dreams and I'm like noooooooo Mara it'll be okay I promise!)

WHOA, THE MILLENNIUM FALCON? What exhibit is this?!

Thanks for the shout-out! :) I love when Star Wars fans love Star Wars.

I have that same reaction to Alderaan in ROTS. And I have often wondered whether it's weird for Jimmy Smits to think that, in a way, every time he watched Alderaan blow up when he was a kid, he was watching himself (okay, his character) blow up.

I linked to it in my first reply in the above comment thread. :-D

man, I read your post, and I was like "well, I'm not so hardcore with the Anakin/Padme shipping" (alTHOUGH I will admit that between reading your recaps of and watching episodes of Clone Wars, their relationship blossoms in light of it actually being treated and acted like a Serious Canon Thing rather than something George Lucas stuck in a script that Natalie Portman couldn't find believable; it is kind of like how EU!Obi-Wan is so much more Jedi than movie!Obi-Wan and is thus simultaneously less and even more shippable with Padme, but I digress, like whoa), but then I sat back and said, "you know what? My first midnight premier was AOTC, and nothing was not cool about a theater full of fans going HELL YEAH YODA'S GOT A LIGHTSABER" and went "...yep, I'm one of the crazies." But loving it! :-D

...well you just blew up my mind. :-b

Yeah, I think I didn't actually start shipping Anakin/Padme untl I read the novelization and was like, "Oh. Yeah. I kinda get that." And then I ran with it in my mind and made it increasingly legit. Plus somebody pointed out that they were doing the courtly love thing, and I was like, "THEY SO ARE!"

I didn't know anyone actually read my CW recaps. Maybe I should finish the last one.

There's really nothing cooler than being in a large group of really enthusiastic, happy fans. It's one of my favorite things about being a Star Wars fan. :)
