...you know, I am SO TEMPTED to post the lyrics to "Paper Planes" today...because it is, after all, that kind of a day, but instead I will gank from Checkers, and post the poem she posted yesterday that I loved so very very much.  From Antonio Machado:




Last Night as I was Sleeping
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.

Last night as I slept,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.

Just fyi, many of Machado's poems were turned into songs by Catalan singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat. This would probably be of more interest to you if you were fluent in Spanish, but, even when that's not the case, you still owe it to yourself to check out "Cantares."

oo oo oo! there was a discussion going on on the original post about the nature of this particular translation; if you have time and would care to, you wanna check out the original poem and tell me how this translation matches up?

and I will! if the music captures the feel of the poetry, I doubt the language will matter. :-)
