Because I have never actually read this poem in its entirety, I decided to post it today.  From Joyce Kilmer:

Trees
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I never have either. I always thought it was an Ogden Nash couplet - I think that I shall never see/A billboard as lovely as a tree

the things you learn from lj posts!

hahahahahaha Ogden Nash hahaha.

The only reason I knew it was Joyce Kilmer was from Scholars Bowl (Jeopardy on teams) in high school--because we always forgot who the poet was. :-b

Did you know that all the Rest Areas on the NJ Turnpike are named after famous New Jerseyans? There's a Joyce Kilmer Rest Area.

I feel illiterate...I for some reason thought it was Emily Dickinson...and I think I have read the whole thing. I never quite felt it seemed like Dickinson.
