has mostly sucked.

also, so does the show glee, it turns out. you know what would be really effed up? teacherman/bitchchick. SHIP IT NOW. that would add a gossip-girl-esque tinge that I think this show needs. Desperately.

...see this is a sign of how bad I am feeling. things I should do: go to bed.

things that are currently making me feel AWESOME ABOUT LIFE despite the crappiness of this weekend:

1) Mass tonight, and the readings, and the general idea of okayness in the world.

2) THIS:

daughtry you always made me feel better.

eta: oh and this:

ah-hahahahahahahaha this makes me feel so much better I don't even know why.

son of adam edit: oh and this too, while we're at it:

the point that it's supposed to be uplifting or have good morals or something? in that case, why is the GUIDANCE COUNSELOR hitting on a MARRIED MAN?

that explains why HE is flirting with HER (not that it's a good explanation). It does not explain why someone whose alleged job is to help people deal with their problems is attempting to cause one of the worst problems of all.

nevermind the fact that, okay, I get it, germophobe is a cute distinguishing characteristic, but this woman is working in a HIGH SCHOOL.

things like this is why no one trusts guidance counselors.

Eh, I don't think she does so on purpose - she has feelings for him, obviously, and doesn't really know how to deal with them, because she knows that it's "wrong." So she hangs out with him, but can't quite master the art of doing it in a way that isn't... tinged with some degree of flirtatiousness, for lack of a better word, subconscious or not.

He's attracted to her too, on some level, and probably in denial about it (because he wants to be a good guy, and good guys don't fall for women who aren't their wives). What might pass as "hitting on her," were he single, is probably just harmless friendliness in his eyes. Which just makes the whole thing worse.

o-oh.

OH

GOD.

Stay perfectly still and stare a lot. Vampires in twilight tend to stare for extended periods of time and stand/sit/freeze in certain positions when something grabs their attention.

OH GOD

Walk quick, but act as if it's a normal speed, be graceful(dancing ballet lessons will help this) walk in long strides. If you want to be like Alice use quick short step movement though still graceful, where it looks like your dancing.

OH GOD

Stare at people with very deep eyes when they talk to you before answering them. (Try to freak them out but not so much that they don't talk to you anymore.)\\

oh my god. this is—this is the best thing i have ever read

My favorite part:

Try inhaling sharply through your nose. It should make sort of a whooshing sound, and your shoulders should slightly move with this. It's a very Edward-esque move.

Someone, somewhere, is going to pass out practicing this repeatedly in the mirror. Hide those ice packs, girls!!! When you catch pneumonia you will look PERFECT!!

Awww, I heart Glee! Mostly because it has really catchy music, doesn't take itself overly seriously, and is extremely quotable and generally hilarious. Also, Lea Michele's singing voice! ♥

I mean, I'm all about terrible shows. Again, Gossip Girl.

BUT I already like Gossip Girl AND this one has pacing issues AND wtf overproduced (yes I know all music is overproduced but they don't even hide it, wtf, her voice has no personality because I can't stop hearing how they've DELIBERATELY ERASED IT), quotability is...not in the parts I watched.

like, it wants to be an edgier HSM, but the only reason HSM works is because it ISN'T edgy.

also, they are a show choir, not a glee club.

also I was in a terrible mood when I watched it.

ALSO PACING ISSUES MODERN TV SHOWS WHY.

also the fact that the teacher looks like he should be playing one of the students is not helping. oops.

Why do you think Glee sucks? I've heard nothing but raves about it, and I'm curious why you don't like it.

Also, that little cartoon is very encouraging.

long rant is long

From: [identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com
the raves are probably too busy being blinded by the fact that it's about SINGING to realize that it fills its diversity quota in the most awkward way possible (black chick! wheelchair guy! I don't remember if there's an Asian or not). It also includes completely implausible (and therefore, at least to me, unlikeable) teachers--for example, the guidance counselor is a germophobe who flirts with a married man (whose wife is a bitch), and said married man honestly looks like he should still be playing older high school/younger college characters. And like, the germophobia thing, I get it, it's a cute character tick, but...maybe not one a person wanting to work with teenagers should have.

Meanwhile, the girl you're supposed to like is a complete and utter bitch whose redeeming characteristic is that she likes the football player? Oh, but he has a girlfriend (who is a bitch). Oh, but when he doesn't cheat on his girlfriend, the jilted would-be girl gets to sing Rhianna's "Take a Bow" ("and the award for the best lie goes to you/for making me believe that you could be/faithful").

The writing/dialogue is crap, and it suffers from something I've noticed in mediocre television lately--it rushes things. Like, in Gossip Girl, I'm all over the idea of Blair/Chuck. I am less over the idea that they hook up for the first time, what, three episodes into the show? They could have dragged that out for SO LONG (and I know they're doing it that way now, but it lasts even longer if you delay initial hookup), and it still would've been hot, with them dancing around each other. You barely have a chance to get adjusted to "characters as their lives are now" before suddenly it's "characters as their lives GO TO HELL FOR THE SAKE OF ENTERTAINMENT" (another concept I am generally all over), and so it's like, oh, I don't know how I'm supposed to feel about this.

Like, football guy and jilted-lover chick make out in the second episode. SECOND EPISODE. It's obvious they're going to get together eventually; they've only just started hanging out together in the first episode. There's no need to rush this relationship, and once you start that storyline, I start losing interest, especially because it's so obvious they're going to end up together.

It's like they're trying to be High School Musical, except edgier? Except HSM pretty much appeals on its non-edginess. If they really want to be edgy, the girl-you're-supposed-to-like and the teacher should do some sort of forbidden romance thing (which I would actually ship, because he's so un-teacher-y I could ignore the fact that he's supposed to be an authority figure over her).

And to top it all off, the music isn't that good. While they're probably all at least fairly talented, the music is so obviously overproduced that I am suspicious of their abilities, which is something of a shame. But like, okay, I know pop music is overproduced, but there comes a point where the voice loses all of its natural appeal because it's been so polished to stay on pitch (and pitch is my big thing--because if you can't stay on pitch, it doesn't matter how powerful you are) that it's not even worth listening to. That part is mostly me being a music snob.

so, in sum, lousy characters/lazy characterization, dumb storylines, implausible cliches (cheerleaders who ALL lead the abstinence club? intriguing in theory, less so in practice), bad writing on several levels, and sub-par musical mixing all add to sucky, sucky show.

Also they're very clearly a show choir, not a glee club. Come on, people.

That makes total sense.

If you don't mind me going off on a tangent, though?

I was SO GLAD that Gossip Girl didn't string out the Blair/Chuck relationship in the beginning. I am so freaking sick of people not hooking up just to drag things out.

oh, I completely get you on hating being strung along. But three episodes into a show--when I'm still trying to adjust to the characters--it seemed a little early/extreme.

Especially since that was in the middle of the Chuck characterization re-write. Which I approve of, but wish that they had figured out before they started airing episodes, because rape is one of my 'do not pass go' buttons.

If they really want to be edgy, the girl-you're-supposed-to-like and the teacher should do some sort of forbidden romance thing (which I would actually ship, because he's so un-teacher-y I could ignore the fact that he's supposed to be an authority figure over her).

I forgot to mention - YES. That would be so very awesome. I mean, I've never even watched the show, but I think if that was what was going on, instead of lame football/hot show geek WHICH I SAW TEN YEARS AGO, LITERALLY, I would probably be more into watching it.
