so basically for my Brit Lit II class I have to do this "semi-weekly writings" where I reflect on the readings we've done since the last one we turned in, but uh, as I turned in my last one back in February, I had a lot to catch up on. But this way I was able to examine trends and also just have fun talking about literature.

But just to give y'all an idea of what I've been reading, and again, what I want to do with my life, I'm posting it. Because it was awesome.

what is this?  I found it in a random file in my emails...

evil you call it!
look at those lips: they've tasted something
Bitter as a broth of blood
And spat the sup out.  Was that evil?
Was it?
           Spitefulness you say:
You call that grin of anguish spite?
I'd rather wear this look of loathing
night afer night than wear that other
Once--that cold complacence...

I know what Hell is now--to see.
Consciousness of consciousness...

I am not quite sure who wrote this article, but I find the whole thing oddly endearing.

Highlights include:

"Marrying into the Marx lawyers family of Converted Jews to Christianity"

"On paying debts and getting deceased Mother´s money"

"Let us say a few short words on the evolution of German Socialism till 1875 , after Jewish General German Workers Association, ADAV, (Allgemeiner Deutscher Arbeiterverein), Leader Ferdinand Lassalle died on a duel against ] on 31 August 1864 as stated above. There were succession disputes in Germany leading at the end to the creation, or evolution, towards what is described from then on as SPD."

"Nearby, not far away, former Russian KGB and FSB agent, Russian State Security Services, Alexander Valterovich Litvinenko, (Russian: Алекса́ндр Ва́льтерович Литвине́нко) (30 August 1962 – assassinated 23 November 2006, aged 44), later a Russian dissident and writer rests for ever in English civilized soil, (Polonium radiation external contamination shielding provided).

British roses at dawn, grass keeping fees and flowers memory from all sorts of ordinary people, need money too. You live however for as long as people remembers you, (old proverbe)."

and of course, a final tribute:

"Even though she came from a wealthy family, she stood by Karl's side throughout their life in poverty, as traditional couples did many years ago. In the end of almost every month she had to mortgage her china, from her family, or her tablecloths, but who cares ?. A birth certificate implies soon or later a death certificate also, (God Willing).

Selfish male Karl, family loving Karl, illuminated Karl, are all there, under the London rainy and wet ground, perhaps for ever.

Life is always on the going."

So I'm watching the Alabama/Georgia gymnastics competition, and it turns out when you're watching the balance beam event you're not hearing the floor event music, but the music that the beam performer has picked to be in the background of her event.

So first I heard "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" by Elvis, and then "Come Monday" by Jimmy Buffet, "Sweet Melissa" by the Allman Brothers, and finally "Tuesday's Gone" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

:-D

I'm pretty sure I just saw a commercial for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups using "Jupiter" as the music.  In which the words appeared in conjunction with accented notes in the music.

On a completely different note, the last few chapters of the Monologion are completely crazy, but there is something pretty impressive about that last chapter, where Anselm unveils the final step:  this supreme nature we've been talking about...is GOD.  There's just such a sense of relief that he finally sits down and says what he's been working towards since chapter one.

edited to add:  this link from [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes .  For the two married Amandas on my list, along with anyone who can sympathy with the "writer/programmer" ship.

yet another edit:  I am so frickin' sick of these "high fructose corn syrup is just the same as sugar and is fine in moderation!" commercials.  Apparently I missed the earlier campaign of "OMG HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS OF THE DEVIL!!1!" commercials.  But regardless of its health implications (on the subject of which I am fuzzy), the fact that such a high percentage of our food relies on one product (i.e. corn) for its base means that if a corn blight comes we'll be worse off than Ireland during the potato famine.

Also, Coke tastes better with regular sugar.  Which is clearly the most important issue of all.

Because it made me feel less useless...except the game was actually interesting this year. Also I spent half of it talking to a guy who finally has his relationship status posted on Facebook and guess who's still dating some other girl and also it turns out he bakes but WHATEVER.

also I missed the beginning of the game, so this is where I came in.

oh commercials )

I still think he's ugly, and he needs a shower, and a shirt that fits, but I suddenly love him.

Man, not only did the fandom get an Edward who wasn't hot, they got one who didn't even like his part!

*dies laughing*

edit: okay, apparently he does like his part...I can't imagine how long he had to think to come up with this analysis, but I actually quite like it. Now, if only Stephenie Meyer's prose had actually lived up to the potential he's creating...

It is 21:26 Wednesday 5 November 2008, and I am having my first crisis of conscience over a character death!  Oh no!  I need to keep writing my NaNo, but there is absolutely no way to continue and avoid this character death.  Alas!  I should not have given the old man a name, much less have suggested that in this particular scene he is proudly reliving his glory days in escorting two lovely young ladies to the capital.  I feel as if the only way to make this worse would be to have him start telling the girls about how he used to take the one’s mother and aunt to balls just like this one, and—

OH GOD NOLDY, I’M SO SORRY.

I mean I named him “Noldy” even, which wasn’t very nice.  I mean, geeze, one indignity after another.

musings on how to avoid this, as well as other notes made during the writing process last night )

So my paper is arguing (partially) that Cynthia Wolff is wrong when she says in her article "Who is the Narrator of Vanity Fair and Where is He Standing?" that the narrator's ambiguity shows that he is a weak character.  So I search JSTOR and can't find any record of anyone else citing this paper, so I decide to google "Cynthia Wolff" and "Vanity Fair" to see if anything comes up.

And what I get is this.  Turns out a lot of Britney Spears quick-fact sites include the facts that she posed naked for the magazine Vanity Fair and that her engagement ring was designed by one Cynthia Wolff on the same page.  Huh.
jade_sabre: (funny/absurd)
I originally created this syllogism in the wee hours of the morning before spring break, while I was frantically trying to write my critical history paper of Vanity Fair.  Uh, I think it's funny.  Y'all might not.  But it's kinda a glimpse into what my paper basically boiled down to (and what happens in the field that I am considering).  My subject was basically the role of the narrator in Vanity Fair and how he relates to the structure and characters of the novel.

"The Circuity of Narratological Discussions in Vanity Fair," or, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Thackeray-Style"

If you bring up the fact that the characters are based on real people

then you get sucked into an argument as to whether or not Thackeray is subjective or objective to said characters.

If you get stuck in a subjectivity/objectivity argument,

then you end up discussing whether or not the narrator succeeds in his portrayal of the characters

and then you end up coming out either for or against Becky or Amelia.

If you discuss being for or against Becky or Amelia,

then you will discuss how the narrator treats them

and you might go for Lady Jane

and you might look at how their relationship affects the structure.

If you come out for or against the narrator,

Then you will probably come out for or against the structure of the novel.

If you discuss the moral of the novel,

Then you will probably end up concluding it either

a)      has no moral or

b)   has a horribly depressing moral.

But if you decide the novel has a horribly depressing moral,

Then
you might be tempted to wonder what kind of people in Thackeray's life caused him to write such a sad story...

She posted this hilarious snippet of a Naruto fic she's working on, and so I'm going to post a snippet of an Avatar fic that I had forgotten I was writing until I found it last night in my English notebook.  I'll post exactly what I have, and then you can tell me if I should keep going, I suppose.  I'm a little apprehensive now, though, because I'm afraid that if I were to actually finish it and post it in the next few days, I would get all sorts of "oh no this is what really happens" comments, even if I said PLEASE DON'T SPOIL ME, and so I might never finish it.  Plus it'll be AU very soon, and that puts a damper on my desire to finish it.

Oh well...

Meh.  *wanders off to write Earth King/Mai NaNo*
